View Full Version : DIY: 3.0L Head Stud Upgrade

07-30-2012, 12:29 PM
Getting ready to take off the stock 300x heads and upgrade to some Taylor Marine "MAD EFI" Billet Heads, which are back at Taylor Marine for a little shave work to bump up the compression numbers and remachine the "O" Ring grooves.

The metric threads in the block are metric size M8. After doing a wide search for stud kits and only finding ARP as the only source at an "outragious" price for 40 studs, I opt'd to make my own. Easier said than done, because of the hardness and thread grade needed for studs. I was able to contact a British company that had a warehouse in the states that could supply the material I needed, but I had to purchase a bulk lot of threaded rods (minimun purchase required) oh well........ The material is Class 10.9 Alloy which is equiv. to our Grage 8 spec's. That material should arrive tomorrow, Next on the list was finding some flanged M8 Alloy Flanged Nuts, again meeting the Class 10.9 spec's. Got very luck and swung another deal to obtain these and again, with a minimum quanity purchase required, got plenty of nuts now.....LOL. The nuts shown below are black phosphate coated and quality made pieces. I opt'd for Alloy Threaded stock & Nuts in lieu of stainless for several reasons, galling potential, required hardness in metric hard to find and flanged nuts damm near impossible at a reasonable price and beside, Alloy shouldn't be an issue for use in fresh water. So follow along as I prepare to become "STUDLY"................LOL.

I'll update as progress is made.........

Lots of nuts arrived today:

3.0L DYI Stud Kit Update:

To start out, here's my home made stud kit, each stud was cut to 2.75 lg. using a cut off wheel, hard stuff;

Studs installed in block:

Side note:
I was going to make up kits to sell, but the forum Admin's said "NO WAY" unless I become a "SUPPORTING VENDOR". I wouldn't have a problem doing that except that I don't think there's that much of a need for these that supports having to pay an upgrade in membership, just say'n cause I know I'm gonna get ask to make some up for others.
