in building a v8 evilrude, i kinda understand about removing the VRO. But what about removing the stock fuel pumps to run a Holley Blue pump with pressure regulator?

I've gotta a '79 235 Evinrude I was thinking about doing the same thing to (no VRO) and one of the members here on the board ask "why bother". You gotta wire in a relay, emergency shut-off plus you have pressure on the fuel line inside the boat.
The stock fuel pumps will pump plenty of fuel so why bother. I'm gonna stick with the stock fuel pumps.

I'm getting ready to do the same with my v8 johnson. The old vro's worked fine but keep developing leaks. Let me know if you opt for the electric pump. I'm curious if it affects idle quality.

I would trash the vro. On the older motors problems can happen with the oil pump. If you mix the gas you know exactly how much oil the motor will get at any given time.

...at least with the older ones. I'm told the new design is relatively trouble free, but if you premix, you know it's right.

The VRo is basically a two chamber pump. It uses a single diaphram in between the oil and fuel sides.
As long as you use the updated VRO with the tan nipples you should be OK. In the early days there was a lot of problems with alcohol in the fuel and some problems with jelled oil. Both of which have been overcome. It is very rare to find a vro that pumps fuel perfectly and not the oil, contrary to popular belief.
that being said if you are uncomfortable with the oil part of the vro just block the incoming line off with the supplied rubber cap and run the vro as a fuel pump only.
I have seen more motors torn up from owners forgetting to put oil in the gas than vro failures.
If hi perf. use I would pre mix. But that is just my opinion for what it is worth.

At the begining of last season I pulled the whole VRO system fuel pumps and all out of my 4 liter and installed a blue Holly. My priming pump was shot and I had wanted to clean up the fuel system anyways. Couldn't be happier. Starts better idles great. SMOKES MORE.

If you do switch out the fuel pumps you might want to consider installing a couple of V4 fuel rails to replace the Mickey Mouse set-up that came stock on the V8s.
Good Luck.

I just finished up the install of a Carter electric pump and jegs fuel pressure gauge. The pump puts out 5-6 psi. I lit the candles and the engine idled perfectly. The transom is ten times cleaner looking and no more leaking vro's. Your right though, it smokes alot more. The hell with the vro setup. I'll monitor my pressure when i run the boat. If it holds 5 psi i'll stay with the stock fuel manifolds. Thanks for the info.
