View Full Version : 3 cyl OMC trivia

I brought this up on another thread and thought it would be just something cool that everyone has forgotten.

On 3 cyl's we talk about Stinger's and Hustler's but what was the most unique production triple made by OMC (graphics wise). The clues would be it was made only one year and in one horsepower. Then I want to see if anyone has a pic of it cuz I don't.

I thought the CC was the coolest 3 cylinder made, you mean there's another one.

I know it wasn't the CC, because I don't think Bill would categorize it as "production" and also because he has pictures of the CC.

Could it have been "Charger"?

The graphics on the CC aren't much to look at either

I think the coolest looking one is the checkered flag graphics on the Stinger. 78 or 79?
I have an APBA propller mag some where with a pic of one.

C'mon Bill. Tell us which motor you're talking about.

Would it be the 73 65 stinger with decals on exh & L/U?

Ok, I said it was COOL, cool meaning it was from the 70's it had flower child kinda graphics on the side of the hood. Obviously none of us have ever seen one and I'll have to find the pic. Let's all look in our 1970 archives in the Evinrude brochure for a Surf "60". It looks like a 1970 60hp with a pyschodellic (?) multi-colored wave on the side of the hood and it says "Surf Six 0" on the side...........Only year, only hp Last one I saw was at Evinrudes QC lab there was a hood on the wall........ and no I didn't get it

I remember seeing one on a Glastron when we lived in Ohio. It was at Senica Lake. the Guy even pulled it with a Volkswagon bug with floweres on it. boy I'm showing how old I am. that had to be 71 or 72.

Bill, Whats one worth to you, I think I have one in the shed. I will look next week

Bill Gohr
01-04-2003, 04:44 PM
I'll call you. I didn't think about that....they were probably shipped to all the Flower children.....We still need a pic. I think there was one in the Evvy brochure, also I think there was one in the Glastron also.....

I own a surf six-0. It is really cool - VERY '70s. Unfortunately, most of the colors on my cover are completely bleached out from the sun. I can see some of the colors on one side. I would appreciate pictures if anyone has one, I'd like to restore it.

Back In The Day.. My Parent Were An Evinrude Dealer (franchinse) As It Was Then And The Dealers Were Only Allowed 1 Of These Engine Per Dealeship...

The Old Shop Had A Poster Of The Girl And The Motor On It And The Last Time I Was In There It Was Still On The Wall.. I Will Check To See If It Is Still There

Also That Same Time Evinrude Built Dive Compressers And The Poster Of It Had A Kewl Flower Chik On It As Well ;)

Wow - if you still have that poster and would ever consider selling it I'd love to buy it from you. My brother in law and I co-own the boat it's rigged on and it would be the ultimate Christmas gift for him. :)

hey Swamppanther,
was talkin to a dude thats got a bunch of CCC parts, and I have foundout that thare was a Factory Mod50 15", should have some pics soon of it.

I don't want to add any confusion but both mod 50's (fr19s &fr31m) were built to accomodate a 15" transom as well as the sst 60 or any fishing
motor known as a short shaft(omc) my omc racing model numbers don't
show a fr31s as ever being made but there is a loop charged 3 cyl. listed
built in 1975 with a model number of ft19s and I dont know the specs on
it, also my CCC is for a 15" transom, the only other large motors (omc)
made for a shorter transom (12") is the EFI V8 and the sst 100 of which
I owned one of the latter, anything any shorter than 12" would have to
be custom made, I hope this helps and good luck chasing that wild
goose!

Fast Fred

so this is a 15" shaft? looks short, no?

swamppanther
10-02-2005, 12:26 PM
Thats correct , but it does't hurt to keep digging, best way to find answers!
Fast Fred do you have a spare pivot shaft & yoke? call me 229 246 5937
Thanks

The FT is the motor with a shifting lower unit. The FR is the motor with a racing (direct drive, non-shifting) lower unit.

I appreciate the nostalgia of the Surf six-O...but I also think the color combo looks silly, sorry.

This is what mine looks like, except mine is a shortshaft...probably about the same age.

Nice shot of the old FE combo......what year was that combo? It looks like a rig posted on the allison site!

LakeRacer99
10-31-2005, 09:39 AM
That shot is from a 1972 Evinrude Catalog. The boat isn't an Allison though, I was thinking it was a Delta or Critchfield, but I bet it isn't one of those either. My little 13ft Allison will look similar when I get it done.

I sent this one up for the dyno pull, put the mod50 style vents in it and my trademark hood scoop lift. thats the hull i'm runnin, it's got more flat water
tweeks than the one i have for you, the one i,m thinkin for you i had done in 2001,to replace my hard bottom, it's f'in fast, and she still likes the big bumps,
same style skin rap, blue in the tail, mine's gray. seen this hull kick total a$$,
talkin holesale roast on everbody  far more than once  it's been to TOP O' once, passed ever body in the river pulled in to first , just about to kick it in to litespeed, and stuck number one, that was my bag, got greedy.
would not exspect to see that happen again. guna pull that hull in soon, clean it up, get some shots

I have refurbished Surf 60 cover in mint condition and have it on a 1995 70hp Evinrude to power my 1973 Whaler Katama. The Surf 60 engine was purchased new by my grandmother and father in 1970 (to power a 1970 katama). The engine is long gone but I was sure to hold onto the cover. I know this thread is old so please reply if anyone is interested in seeing a few pics.

Posting these Surf Six O pics for my brother. Cover is on a 92 Johnson. Amazing didnt change a thing from the 70s. Latches line up perfect! We loved this cover as kids and wonder how many were made? I would love to know thye whole back story of how it came to be.

Here are two pics. I use the hood on a 1995 70 hp Evinrude to power a 1973 Whaler Katama. The original engine was on a 1970 Katama. I bought the 73 Katma with my brother 5 years ago - it was a lake boat with one owner and it is in very nice condition. So with the Surf Six 0 hood it looks almost like the original whaler and engine did right out of the showroom 41 years ago.
