Boat wouldn't get into gear and temp alarm going off. Mechanic says crankshaft / spline needs to be replaced. Should consider rebuilding power head while doing the job. Sound right? I think it has low hours (getting the hours tonight) and compression is strong. Should I just replace crankshaft and leave power head alone and how much should that cost? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

you wont know till you remove the lower unit and look at the splines on the shaft, to replace just the shaft if that is all shouldnt be that bad . I would not replace power head if it is running good and compression is good
good luck

How does your mechanic know the splines are bad is it making noise?Maybe the drive shaft is broken! At any rate the lower needs to be pulled to take a look at what you have. Then you can take a good shaft and push it up into the crank and see how much slop there is,and then decide the best way to repair.
