I need a little help after last nights tournament. I have a 89 XR4 150, we launched and ran 12 miles, motor ran great. We left for our second spot and the boat would not get on plane, motor would not wind up. it hit 3000 rpm and that was it. After that the motor would not idle without stalling. Never had any issues prior to this or anything that would indicate a problem is looking to happen. Any idea where to start looking? I checked the obvious, battery, wire connections, loose spark plug wires..I'm thinking switchbox or stator.

Hey Robert,
Every time mine has acted like that it was a switch box. Could be the stator too, like TEXAS20225 said. A while back mine was acting strange and the charging had stopped again, no tach ect. I decided not to mess with the 40 amp water cooled regulator again and changed to the new stator setup with dual 20 amp regs and low and behold it started running right again also. So go figure. Did you change yours over to the dual reg. setup a while back?

I have a stator that I bought years ago for a good deal as a back up. I do have the flywheel puller/lift ring as well. Is it hard to change the stator? I also have to used switch boxes, one is good, not sure which one though, would have to swap them out to find the good one. No I never switched the regulator, I found 2 used 40 amp water cooled for a good price. So i have a backup.

Any retard can change a stator, even me. Observe the stator position before you remove it, and be sure to install the same way (it fits in a couple different positions) Swap one wire at a time from the switchboxes so you don't mix them up.

Only make one change at a time, so you know what fixed it. When it runs correctly, stop fixing.

Also forgot, do I need to set the timing after changing the stator?

Also forgot, do I need to set the timing after changing the stator?

Book says full link and sync after stator change.

I'm thinking of trying to remove the advance module if I can get some info or directions on how to do it.

Unbolt it, disconnect wires, heave it in the trash. Perform link and sync, set max timing at 23 degrees.

Robert do you have a manual with sync and link instructions? The only problem I had changing mine was holding the flywheel while busting the nut loose. I finaly used a long peice of 1" angle iron drilled so I could remove a couple of the bolts on top of the flywheel and bolt it to it. Worked out I used it to torque the nut back down also......... If you need the sync and link let me know, I'll send ya a PDF. You won't regret getting rid of the advance module. Made a big difference in my hole shot for sure.

Please do send it to me, I'm not sure what email is listed on here but send it to [email protected]. I don't have a manual, wish I did though. I tried the online manual thing but it was very vague on proceedures. I plan on removing the advance module, It always felt like the motor had more but would'nt let go if you what I mean. thanks again

I found out how much mercury wanted for one of these and decided to try my hand at making one. Indicator was $13.00 at Harbor freight, a little drilling and tapping and here it is. Now i can set the timing on the motor.

You need a little extension on the end to make it work. Looks just like mine. I can't remember the thread size.......... seems like about 2 in. if I recall.

Ok guys, I found the problem, I have no compression in one cylinder. 119 on the other five. So I guess I'm in the market for another motor. Thanks for everyones help.

Dang I hate to hear that Robert!!!! Have you pulled the head yet? Any idea how bad it is? There are always some good motors for sale here, what HP is your boat rated for?

I think a 200. I have been looking already. I'm not fixing the xr4, I did find a 94 225 3.0l on ebay but I'm not sure if it weighs more than the xr4. NADA says they are within 10lbs.

That's what I've been looking for, my Kenner is rated for a 200. The XR4 is pushing it to 42 @ 5200 rpm which is respectable for the 150 I guess. That's with a 4 blade with the hard cup. I've not been able to get it trimmed out all the way yet, given enough water I'd guess 45 or 46 with the prop on it now. I'm thinking a 2.5 200 would be nice for it. Then if I ever get the old bass boat a new transom I'll still have the XR for it. Always short on funds when one is available ...........
