Hello,
I have a 88 merc 200 black max that doesn't want to stay in the trimmed up position. When trimmed all the way up at the beach I notice that after a half hour or so the engine is down in the sand.
Is there an easy solution to this problem or would it be easier to change out the whole unit.
I do have a whole other assembly but can't figure out how to get the top piston sleeve off the mount. It looks to have a small pin going thru it and I'm not sure if I can just hammer it out or not.
Any info would be much appreciated

Before you remove the unit, check the bleed screw, or even replace it better yet. When you do remove the old one, compare the new to the old. I've seen the tip break off, and folks thread in the new screw tight, jamming in the tip.
Is there any sign of hydraulic fluid around the unit?

There are several seals and valves that can cause leakdown, the easiest to check are the Manuel relief valve,as mentioned...also if that dosent help you can try replacing the port side trim ram. This ram has a valve in it that bypasses fluid from low to high side to allow the motor to come up if you run aground or hit something. When this valve wears it can cause leakdown...quite common.you can use a starboard side ram(no valve) for test purposes, but if that solves the leak be sure to replace it with a proper port side ram...you don't want to tear your transom out.if neither of these fix your leak you're probably sol...change the unit.Yes,that is a stainless nail, drive it out,and then the pivot pin will drive out,an air hammer is helpful,Chris

Till then, you can carry a 2" stick or 2" x 2" board and lay it across the transom bracket. "Cajun style"

Thank you for the info. I will see if I can fix it.
