Need Help with OMC Seadrive 2.6L Ducted

Hi all. I am new to this forum and new to the boating world. I have an 84 OMC Seadrive 2.6L Ducted. We were out on the water and everything was going fine. But then the motor just shut off and would not start back up. Took it home and did a compression test and all were running around 100. Any ideas of what i can do or where i can begin? My only guess is that it could possibly be the water pump. Doesnt seem to be spitting water out very well. Also the foot wasnt sealed properly and was leaking, could that also cause problems with the water pump. Thanks in advance to everyone!!!

Well you have compression. Now you need fuel and ignition. Stop switch lanyard?

Well i have all of the key elements to make it run, such as fuel and ignition. But I think that the motor might of over heated. Which I dont have much knowledge with outboard motors, but i would assume that they are like regular motors. So i would assume that if the water pump is bad, that it would cause the motor to overheat. But is there anyway to test the water pump to make sure that it is functioning properly? If there is not, does anyone have a recommendation for where to buy one for a reasonable price. Thanks again!!!

So you have spark and fuel and it still won't run? How did it shut off? Did it seize? If so, you probably have some internal damage. I take it the hot alarm horn never sounded?

The motor isn't seized up, but the motor is over heating, so that would be a water pump issue, correct??

It's possible for a motor to seize and suddenly stop from overheating, then free up after it cools down. Sudden stops can cause the flywheel key to shear throwing it way off timing. If you have spark, fuel and compression, then I'd check the flywheel indexing.

Ok, is there anyone who could explain briefly how to check the timing? It cranks right up though. Could it still possibly be the timing?

Well the boat is running now. An I am trying to see what I can possibly do to test it or repair it to where I don't have this issue again. I didn't even get to open it up...😠😠😠

Thermostats, pressure relief valves, water pump, debris, a slew of things. Drop the gearcase and check the pump. If the pump housing is worn, go ahead and get a kit, not just the impeller. Oh, and if you don't have some type of manual, get one. The factory manuals are the best. Check ebay.

If it hasn't been serviced, you need to do that too... change the gearcase oil, grease all fittings, etc, etc.

Ok I'll try this and keep ya posted. Now to find someone who carries the replacement parts. Thank you so much for all of your help. Never owned a boat before or had to do repair on a boat. Therefore it's a learning process for me. So all and any suggestions are accepted. Thanks again !!!
