hens and chickens is about a mile and a half NE of the sandbar at holiday isle, I've taken a 19' action there on a nice day, 15' of water and tons of colorful fish

They've got sharks and we've got alligators .
Both leave a nasty mark if they get a hold of you .
I think the gators are a larger threat , as most of the waters they live in , you can't see them till is to late .

I have lived here all my life . You would be surprised by the sharks I have seen on the bay side over the years just in the route you take for the keys run from the carribean club to the sand bar....Now the Crocodiles are showing up in greater numbers than I have ever seen, not sure how that's going to turn out.

We snorkel the reefs in the keys regularly. We have had encounters with sharks almost every time. If we were on the menu, you wouldnt be able to get in the water and survive.
Took these at Pennekamp.

Yes, sharks are just part of our scenery!

Yeah, it's a big'un but that doesn't worry much more than one 1/2 it's size... Either a real big one or a common size one is gonna do irrepairable damages if it makes it's mind to do so..

RMN018, ten-four on the gators... Swimming in the usual murky waters, a person would be none the wiser if one is 18" away and lurking until slam, roll, drown, done... I watched a couple this year on our local river and it's amazing how a several hundered pound teethy lizard can slink into the water an dissapear inches under the surface and swim away without even leaving a ripple or sign other than a very small tell-tail bubble trail that is only visible in dead calm water if your purposely looking for it...

Sharks and Gators, the only two things that I fear in the water...

We deal with flying carp. They can and will knock you out of your boat but THEY WON"T EAT YOU. I'll stay in the river thank you.

If you've ever flown down the coast line in a small aircraft , you would be shocked at just how many sharks there are right off our beachs .
I've always been suprised there are not more attacks then there are .
But I still play in the waters around here , both the river and the ocean .

The Crocodiles are a product of FP&L , and the cooling canals . They started breeding them there off Black Point years ago , as a program to help safe the speices . Now like everything else we try to fix , there back out in the wild and posing a threat . There suppose to be much more aggresive then the gators are , so try and keep your distance , when you know they are there .

I live right on the bay in key largo. I have two boys 3 and 6 years old. It has been a concern lately. I feel I have to watch them very, very closely . I never even saw a crocodile when I was growing up here. I had not heard about them breeding them before this. I feel it is only a matter of time till someone is hurt or worse. The local officials tell us we cannot bother them and if we don't like it we should stay away from the water! Swim at your own risk, they say! They need to make up their minds. Do I live in and pay taxes in a prime tourist destination or a wild life refuge? Our local government wants to have it both ways. Wait till a tourist becomes lunch. A crock already snatched someone's 55 pound dog of a dock in a heavily populated area where chidren live and play.

Yep. We just got back from there and read in your local paper about the one drowning the dog. They are relocating it for the 2nd time!
If it were my dog (or worse) they'd be relocating it to a freagin hole in the ground.

Since you guys brought alligators to the table,I look at the pictures from there, you have your feet dangling in the water lily pads every where, just looks like lunch to me.

one night while fishing east of fowley light in a 24' aquasport with twins, drifting , fishing deep with big squid for swordfish, my buddy and I had an encounter with the biggest bull shark I have ever seen anywhere...my aquasport is 8' wide, this shark had the chum bag in his mouth on one side higher than the gunnel and his tail thrashing on the other side, ripped the bag off then came back , put his mouth around the whole lower unit including prop and began thrashing his head back and forth trying to rip the motor off the back of the boat...was quite exciting thinking he might sink the boat before he left, we put a whole clip of 9mm thru his head at CLOSE range, you could see the bullet trails going right thru him, finally he let go and swam away with one final thud under the boat...WOW was that big and mean looking

my 4 year old daughter's incentive to learn to swim has been when she gets good enough at it, i will take her diving on a reef and show her a shark. I did the same thing for her brothers and i want her to respect but not fear them. I have had a couple close calls (and one small bite), but if you dive, they are there and usually dont mess with you. Having said that, I *&$%# hate bull sharks! they are not like most sharks, they will bit for the fun of it. That is a big bad mo'fo right there.

I've been saying for a long time that we need to control the populations. And I don't mean relocation!!! Alligators are prevalent in all southern states now.

Sometimes I think our DNR and WL&F wants us to stay out of the water and out of the woods. :nonod:

All my friends that have dogs here on the bayou or river relocate them to turtle bait floating on the surface. I keep telling them to ventilate the belly after it floats!
