Can I use a Yamaha digital tach on my 97 175 Evinrude Ocean Pro. They both have 12 pole alternators and they can use the same analog tach settings. Has anyone tried this?

Can't think of a reason it won't. I have hooked them up on a Mercury.

The tach part will work but you will have a blinking oil level indicator and the trim gauge wont work but you might be able to adapt it.

its just a gauge that displays signals sent to it, you can use it.

Thanks for the help..
I can now answer my own question. Yes, the Yamaha Pro Series II digital tach will work with a Johnson or evinrude that uses a 12 pole alternator, which is the most common. I also was able to get the trim gauge to work, thou it does not zero out. I have the temp light, low oil and check engine lights working on the gauge. The color codes on the Yamaha gauge are:
Grn/wht - Hot Light
Pink - Trim sender (http://www.screamandfly.com/#)
Grn/red - Oil light (2-stroke)
Blue/wht - Check engine
Wht/red - Water in fuel (4-stroke)

Water in fuel has nothing to do with the engine and as far as I know was not intended to be on the gauge. Some gauges would show the symbol for no reason and you had to cut the wire to get it to turn off. The later gauges did not have the symbol. Never saw the check engine light, thats odd. Good work on getting the other lights to work tho

The water in fuel is for 4-stroke application. http://www.yamahaoutboards.com/sites/default/files/CommandLink%2520Operation%2520manual%28Round%29.pdf This is a link for command link manual, the basic gauge layout of icons is the same as the Pro Series II. Look on page two, the Water in Fuel and Maintenance required symbols are shown. I said check engine, but that is on the systems check gauge.
