What ya got that mounted on?
I finally made it to the shooting range and shot my AR's. It was kinda intimidating. Here me and my brother are doing initial sighting in with our rifles, iron sights, at 25yrds. and the Nat Guard snipers are ringing a 600 yrd. steel target.
Although the N.G. instructor, I guess that's what he's called, did come on over to where we were shooting and complemented me on the AR's that I built/assembled.

Just curious CDave.. how far have you tried shooting your AR with iron sights? I hear the same 600 yd story from my dad with a M16 which was in Vietnam but he never said how big the targets were in practice. Been thinkin bout buyin an AR just because both my SKS's are so dang heavy. An 8" steel target gets hit 3 out of 4 shots at 250 yards with iron sights on either of my guns but just haven't had a chance to shoot at any longer distances. I like the 30 cal but would like to hear from someone else bout the 223 before I go though down some dough on one.

We only shot at 25 yrds. before the weather shut us down. The Nat Guard were shooting bolt action rifles not AR's.
If you like larger calibers look at Alexander Arms 6.5mm AR's. The 6.5mm almost equals the ballistics of the .308 Win. and is still supersonic past 1000 yrds. Plus you can shoot from 90 gr. to 130gr. bullets. http://www.alexanderarms.com/
I have .223 and the 6.5mm., I like them both.

That is a sweet rifle! I like that camo on the barrel.
Here's some bullets for ya. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1758211174/nosler-ballistic-tip-varmint-bullets-22-caliber-224-diameter-60-grain-spitzer-boat-tail

I put a Winchester synthetic stock, ebay buy, and a Leupold Mark 4, ebay buy, on my Winchester M70 30-06 w/ BOSS barrel. I also installed a 20MOA mount on it and hope to get good enough with it to shoot the 600yd. lane at the range...some day.

the AR's are good to 500+ with a 16" barrel and 600+ with the 20" barrel (shooter dependant) with iron sights...dont expect it to have any knock down power at that range but hitting a target is no problem

Nice shooting iron Forkin',,,, I have a Ruger V-77 in .22-.250 for my critter gitter. My old parrire dog shooting buddy had the same Ruger in the .220 Swift. They sure are proud of them.220 bullets. You gonna reload yer own I suppose?

Thanks guys. Russ, I'm going to shoot factory rounds (if I can find what I want) for now. I just have to gather everything up to reload.

Nice looking gun Forkin'. Reloading is definitely the answer. I loaded some 62 gr nosler partitions for 223 to see if my son can get a shot on a deer up close this season. Even if you buy new brass, it is still better.

Winchester ballistic silvertips are also a great bullet. Very pleased with those out of my 7mm-08 during the last deer season. 4 of the 6 I shot with that bullet combo dropped in their tracks.

Yeah well if you shoot a deer in the eye at night, blinded by light at 50 yards , he better drop ! !! The other two musta been at least outta range at 53 yards or what ? ? ?

The point I was making is the bullet is a very good one, in fact my local hunting store has a hard time keeping them in stock, in most all calibers, so I think it would be a good factory ammo option, and since the bullets are available for reloading, I think it would be a serious contender if I was loading ammo for that gun. I'd use it, and plan to in my 223.

I wuz jackin' with ya. I gave up on the tipped rounds long ago, anymore I perfer the soft points. In my 22-250 I shoot the hollow point boat tails in 55 gr. nasty things happen when they stop...

I am learning in leaps and bounds!!! We, my mentor and I ... He... took it apart and set the trigger at 3.25#... or so. ;)

A really nice torque wrench (I bought to use on boat motors) was put use on a gun! Freaking cooooool Man! :D

"We" torqued all the mounts, stock, etc evenly, of which he said was very important.

Then "we" straightened all the ammo with a Concentricity Gauge/Straightener.

Shooting 50 gr PSP Remingtons for the moment....

The best thing is, I hit the cardboard at 400yds!!!

Thinking of trying to zero at 300?

Concentricity of the ammo is important. Sounds like you have some good help. Post some pics of the groups
