Just interviewed for a position there and before committing, I'd like some input as to the area. From the satellite view, it leaves a lot to be desired plus it would mean my having to put back on the uniform for weekend duty. At least the GS12 pay during the week will be nice. Putting the uniform on after not wearing it for four years is going to be rough....
Biggest thing is it would put us close to Mom & Dad in Mobile, AL. I've been searching and praying for an opportunity to get closer to home after living overseas for 13 years now. -Jamie

The fishing is good but N.O. is an "Armpit" of a city. Hopefully you don't have any kids....

Last time I was there was 2 days after Katrina so I'm afraid I can't offer much as my opinion of the area would undoubtedly be somewhat skewed.:D

It's a suburb kinda place. Oil field, fishing, the Naval Air Station and next door to New Orleans. New Orleans isn't the place to live but a lot of fun places to visit and some of the best food in the world. I've only driven through Belle Chasse on the way to going offshore. If you like fishing and boating there is plenty of places to do it.
I'd ask over at the ByUBoyz.com you will find people that live there or near by.

Thanks guys. The area is a big concern and we will expand our search towards the midwest and further north. Quality of schools and life outside the home are big players in our decisions. I guess Europe has spoiled me over the last decade.
I've got to give an answer by Friday as to my acceptance of the position. From the details received yesterday, its going to be more of a challenge than I'm willing to accept. Being the outsider taking over the RM shop, makes me wonder why they could not/did not find a candidate from within. Then add that the uniform goes back on one weekend a month.... it seems my mind is made after one nights sleep.

Talk to G-Man on the By-U-Boyz board. He's from Marrero, not far from there. I used to live in Mandeville, which is across the causeway from New Orleans on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain. That is a very nice area but not really commutable to Belle Chase. T-Rex lives northwest about an hour but used to live in the city...he might be able to give you some advice also. One thing about the boating...you'll never run out of water. You can see everything from alligators to dolphins on one boat ride. I drove the boat 100 miles one day without going through a no wake zone.
And what they other guys said...New Orleans is a freak show of druggies, perverts, transvestites, and it stinks. Good food though and lots of history. If your folks are from Mobile then I don't have to tell you about having the white sand beach of the MS coast only a couple hours away either.
