Have you ever had a boat forsale and after talking to a potential buyer not wanted to sell it to them?? Reasons I will not go into. But to sell a 100++ MPH boat I need to know the buyer knows what he is buying and I need to be able to sleep at night.
Anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me?

No problem at all,i just charge xtra for driving lessons....
Bud the last turnkey 100+ boat I sold I made the new buyer sign a letter I had prepared that stated the motor should not be put on the boat. It also stated all rigging in boat should be removed as it was installed only for travel and was not installed with any intention to use as is. New buyer kinda chuckled when I asked him to sign it but he did. Probably wasn't worth the paper it was written on with the way these pos lawyers are today. The first turnkey STV I sold went to a newbie and I did give him a few lessons but he was a lawyer and there was certainly no point in having him sign anything. I think putting potential issues in front of the sale shows class.

Bud,
It's your baby, you have the right to sell it to whom ever you choose. Just because they are the first one with the money does not make them the buyer. When selling something as special and as dangerous as our fast boats our keeping others safe from themselves may have to come first. You'll know when it's time...

It's not about the money Guys. But it is about the safety of the buyer to me. I need to know or be convinced that he/she is not going to go out and get hurt or even something worse. Randy i have sold other boats that I felt comfortable with and I always include a clause about me not being responsible for actions pertaining to the improper use of the Boat. I always spell out what the boat is capable of and the proper use there of. And I accept no further responsibilities and buyer agree's to same.
And I get the Bill of Sale notorized.
I guess what i'm saying is, I'd rather not sell the boat if I do not feel that comfort zone.
I grew up with mentors that taught me. But a unknown buyer after talking and asking questions and not receiving the correct answers scares me to death.
I'd prefer not to sell than to sell and someone get themself hurt.

I built a motor many years back ( Modified 2.5 Long Block ) for a customer that was putting it on a Hydrostream. Dunno what model but I was contracted to build this high HP Long Block and he was going to finish the rest. We had several conversations about the motor over powering the hull and it was a handfull to drive. Got a call from his wife that was upset to the max and told me that I was going to orphand her childen by building something that was going to kill thier Daddy and her husband. At first I though it was a joke but after a few seconds I relizied she had a real concern. I told her that I was contracted to build all the power I could muster and I was not responsible for what a customer puts these motors on. Thats the reason 99.9% of the time I refuse to place a powerhead on a customers boat.
I kinda feel the same about selling a gun to someone , you can never be sure what and how its to be used...

Nothing wrong with your way of thinking, the world needs more people that have your type of standards. If the sale is something that your going to worry or loose sleep over don't do it. :nonod:
Just remember the guy you look at every morning in the mirror is the only one that counts, so please him and only him. JMO :D

Bud, you are so right. Forget about worries about liability, we have a moral responsibility. Just read the "Please Be Careful" thread on the General Boating forum--HydroBP's wife was killed by a boater in a fairly routine boat just purchased who had no idea which side of the waterway to run on. So much more to consider when it is a high performance boat. I agree with you--only goes to someone who knows how to use it, or will invest the time with you to learn.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. The conversation just didn't feel right. I always ask alot of questions and respond with concerns following the answers in question. The answers and responses I receive usually tell me alot.
While technically I am not responsible as long as I include all the right Bill of Sale language. I just have issues sometime and don't get that warm comfeey feeling.
I would sell this boat to the guy but he needs to buy it without the power I have. Then he can power it anyway he wants.

I'm with ya Bud, the thought of selling something capable of hurting someone scares the hell out of me. Even without power it makes me nervous.

Bud, I think you are doing the wrong thing,.............sometimes the gene pool just needs to be thinned. :D:D:D Didn't know you had a boat that would hurt anybody. :p:p:p :D
Seriously, I sold a boat to a guy one time and thought to my self,.............."what the hell did you just do?"...............as it turns out the guy used a little common sense while getting used to it.

its not about what you can get away with (legally), its what you can live with. been there, did the same thing bud, and i don't regret it at all. its not just themselves they could hurt, but other people as well, not to mention the families that are affected.

The rest of the Story. So I receive a voice message from last night 10:49 p.m. Same guy that called the other day. Says he wants to come see the boat in a couple of days but he needs my address again because he lost it when re programing his GPS.
So I receive another call this morning 7:30 a.m. It's him. I tell him he might want to change his mind because I have decided to sell the boat without power. He says he really wants it with the power head I have. Then he tells me he's on his way???????.
He tells me again he wants it with power. I again tell him I am not selling my power heads as I have decided to keep them for another project. I tell him he can probably find a nice powerhead on S&F. He says he can drive the hell out of them but he is not very mechanically enclined and wouldn't know how to install a powerhead. He says well ok then but I'm already in Atlanta Georgia???????????????????????????? Now his voice message said he wanted to come see the boat in a day or two and he needed my address again because he lost it from his GPS?????
I said didn't I tell you to get up with me before you decided to come see the boat? I'm sorry you have already left but I can't just stop everything I'm doing for you to show up un scheduled. He says well OK then and we dissconect.
This guy lives in Western Kentucky, I live in North East North Carolina, He says he is already in Atlanta Georgia and doesn't even have my address. Have the States relocated themselves over night. OR Am I missing something here Guys?

Sounds like a prick, I'd ignore him. Anyone who is that big of a pain in the ass beforehand is going to be a nightmare afterwards.
