just changed exhaust dividers, where the coils mount in the middle instead of on each side. i used my old coils i had, along with their hardware to mount on the new divider plate. i know its wired right, but after running it to make sure everything was ok, i noticed the tach quit working. then i touched the rectifier and it was very hot. so hot it blistered my finger. couldnt find a place to mount it , so i let it hang loose. needs to be grounded, right? did i ruin anything else? thanks steven

It doesn't have to be grounded, It uses the block as a heatsink. You are most likely ok. I would check the stator, ohm it out. Bob

Bob, I have to disagree! If the rectifier isn't grounded there is no return for the +12v going to the battery and therefore won't charge. I think you may haved wired it wrong. I would still check the stator. Sounds like you ran the 90vac from the stator to the +12v side of the rectifier. May have blown your tach also.

It also depends on which rectifier/regulator this is..Either way it needs to be grounded and be mount to the block or some other mounting bracket to act as a heatsink..

I could be wrong about the ground, looking at the manual 90-814098 2-190 electrical and ignition 2d-3 I don't see a ground connection on the rectifier. It could be a 4 diode bridge with 2 feedin + and 2 feeding ground through the back plate. I thought the 16 amp rectifier only had 2 diodes in it . But I never tried to read for the second pair . I have to clean the shop some time this weekend , you have me curious , I'll dig one out and put the meter on it. Thanks Bob
The 16-amp rectifier is a four diode full wave bridge rectifier. It will need to be grounded.

thanks everyone, i have ran this setup a few times with no problems until now. it was mounted on the old coil plate before and seemed to work fine. i assume its ruined now since the tach quit. it has a positive wire that goes to solenoid, 2 yellows from the stator, and the tach wire goes with one of the yellows. thanks again steven

If it is mounted to the coil plate make sure the plate has a ground strap going to the block if it is on rubber mounts..

vector pat, i will have to find a place to mount it. this motor came with a 40 amp system and i switched it over to 16 amp. theres no room on the ignition plate to put it like it was on my other motor. thanks, steven
