Ok, traveling up NJ Turn pike taking Veranzo narrows Bridge ($$$$$$$$$$$$$) then Shore parkway then up to 495 over to Stoney Brook.
Is Saturday /Memorial Day weekend going to present traffic jams? I dont know if this is a high beach traffic area. Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you want to lessen the amount of money you'll be giving the criminal enterprise that is the N J Tpke Authority you can take 295 after you cross over the Del Mem Bridge. Look at a map and you'll see that it runs parallel to the turnpike for a long ways. Just pick the exit that has a road that coincides with an exit on the turnpike. We go to VB with a trailer every year and when they decided to double the tools I decided to stop using there road. :)
As for Long Island, I lived there for 5 years, count on sitting in traffic. You can't take the parkways in NY so after you go over the Verazzano you're pretty much committed to the BQE to the LIE to head out onto LI unless you want to take side streets (Atlantic Avenue I think it is). You're best bet it very early morning or late night.
If you want more info on getting around the turnpike I can get them when I get home.
Edit: When I said you can't go on the parkways in NY I'm not sure if that applies to Shore Pkwy on SI but definitely to The Belt, Southern and Northern States, as well as the ones that run north-south on LI itself.

Thanks for the response. I've been up that way . I am more concerned what Memorial day traffic on Saturday brings.
Why can't I take the parkways?

Trailers are not allowed on them. Neither are commercial vehicles or large trucks. I would say get in early or the night before.
I believe on SI that road is called "The South Shore Expressway" so you can run a trailer there. Been a long time since I went through that part of NYC but a guy at work lives there.

I usually take the turnpike to the George Washington Bridge and then the LIE. Your allowed on the parkways for a short minute to get from exit to exit.

No Trailer . Just driving my SUV up to move my daughter in. I am familiar with the roads, Just looking to see if the Veranzoo and the 495 would be extremly heavy traffic due to memorial day.

Maybe if you've got a badge to flash but otherwise they can ticket you for doing it. :D
Wanna avoid the high tolls on the way out you can take the Verazzano to the BQE (no toll that direction) to the LIE. On the way back the LIE to the Clearview Expressway to the Throbs Neck Bridge then the Cross Bronx to the GWB straight to the NJ Tpke south.

Take the Verrazano to Belt Pkwy (east, Long Island) Stay to the left for the Belt Pkwy as you cross the bridge. Stay on the belt Pkwy until you see the Cross Island Pkwy north (exits to the right). Take the Cross Island Pkwy north to the Long Island Expressway (495) east.
1) You WILL hit traffic on the Belt Pkwy ( hell it gets backed up at 4am!!) Avoid the Southern State pkwy that day. There's an air show with the Blue Angels that weekend at the beach and any pkwys along the south shore will probably be crowded.
If your driving up on Saturday traffic shouldn't be as bad as Friday...... The Hamptons scene gets started that weekend and all the idiot celebrities and wanna be's head out there on Friday!
I've lived here my whole life and have driven these roads at all times of the year and this is the route I would take.

If you supported Ron Paul, there would be no traffic jams

best thing ive found... "maps" on your smart phone... when your on your way here open it and turn on option for traffic. now just stay off any roads high lighted in red. The green high lighted roads are moving great and yellow ones are slow. i swear by it and check it every day before i venture to and from the city.
