I'm repowering my boat and looking for anyone that has any input on these motors. I want to get the 300x but it's pricey and not sure on the reliability, one year warranty vs two for the opti, and three for the efi. How have these motors held up and is the power worth the big jump in price?

TIA

what motor from mercury other than the 4stroke has a 3yr warranty

250xs---2yr warrnaty
300x----1yr warranty
250xb---1yr warranty
225x----1yr warranty
225efi---1yr warranty

it also depends on what kind of boat you are running and how far you run your boat on most trips to the river.

I must have looked at the warranty wrong. The motors are going on a 32 foot deep v that will be rigged with triples. Most of my boating is short runs back and fourth to the beach with one or two long trips a year.

I would look seriously at the 250hp Yamaha EFI for a boat like that. Tons of torque and unsurpassed reliability.

if it was me i would go with the new 300x,, 900hp on that boat should haul ass.. if its a performance boat then go with the performance motor,, there is not enough savings between all the motors to justify a smaller motor unless you have a reallly light boat then i would go with the new 200xs merc's.

I was thinking about the Yamaha's for reliability but saw a test recently of a 33' deep v C/C with triple 250 Yamaha's and it maxed out at something like 65. My boat with twin 275 mercs ran 62. Maybe it was just how the boat was set up but I'd be pretty unhappy if I only picked up a few mph going to triples.

Which is why I'm leaning towards the 300x but they are another few thousand per motor over the 250's so I'm not sure which way to go.

Optimax shows some great potential. Fuel efficent and quiet and excellent excelleration. Did I say that but in all sincerity they are getting a good review. Rick

jerry says go with the 250 mercs , the 300x's might be faster but not as relaible. and with the 250 you can buy extended warrantys. the 250 have more mid range than the 300x !!

don't get as much benefit from the third engine as you might think. On offshore race boats, the center engine only accounts for about 15 to 20 percent whereas the outer two carry the remainder. Sounds strange, but true.

what would happen if you proped the center engine to carry more of the load?

I know last summer the Opti's had a 4 or 5 year warrantee!

markus has a good idea.. the new 250 yamahas are good runners LOTS of torque and hold a load well for your bigger boat .. and the fuel efficiency is inredible..give k&k outdoard a call after the new year(closed till then) if you would like.. yamahas perform well as performance motors althouh most people dont agree. if u r from long island the i am sure you have seen a few of the ghost,s around with yamahas.. these guys run the **** out of em with little or no problems.. plus the new 250 has the stock water pickups lowered an inch and an eighth so youy can run em higher.. also ceck with your merc dealer on the warranty issue of triples .. i have heard that with triple engine setups the warranty is shorter ..dont know why just what i have heard.. hope this hlps out ..

Thanks for all of your imput. I'm still trying to make up mind. I'm leaning towards the 250 merc but will look into the Yamahas. Also I found this Scream and Fly test on the 250 merc vs the 300x

http://www.screamandflyoffshore.com/Mercury%20300X.htm

They ran the test on a 28 Skater and it picked up 15 mph going to the 300x from the 250. I know my boats a V hull so I'm not sure how good of a comparison it is. For 15 mph I would go with the 300x but with the weight of my boat vs the Skater I'm not sure how much of a gain it would be. The 250 tops out at 5800 vs 6800 for the 300x my question is will the 300x turn a larger prop then the 250's or just turn the same prop higher?

The Fountain dealer here said that 2 300's are as fast as triple 225 optimax's. It was the new 37ft fishing boat.
