Does any body no the exact meterial that the small or fat shaft sportmaster prop shafts are made out of

I would guess 304ss due to rust.

:nonod: 304 is non magnetic. Place a magnet on any prop shaft and see what happens.

all the hipo shafts are hard steel and they are plated thats why you see the pitting and rusting on the spline areas same as the drive shafts they are also one piece and not fused together like the fishing motor propshafts i thought for a long time that the consumer drive shafts were all stainless but they or most of the pieces i had left from cutting and re-splineing i took the to a scrap place to sell them as stainless last year( i had a lot of pounds) but sadly only two were non magnetic so that my experience with pure stainless in the merc shafts

Because I plan on building my own 1" prop shaft for my sportmaster since mercury found it convenient to stop making them and leaving me with a bunch of worhtless props unless i spend as much money rehubing them as it would cost to build my own shaft

Like Texas mentioned the HIPO's are one piece hardened steel, 613 axle steel to be exact.
They are machined to finish size (except the bearing races) then hardened and normalized. Bearing races are finished on the grinder and seal areas polished.

I have modified a bi metal (Bravo if I remember correctly) shaft once. I had to go up in the butt of the shaft and machine/grind out where the shift cam and shift follower rides. It worked fine for awhile but the end results were this. Yep we found the prop the following weekend with the spline still in the hub. It happened right at the dock doing a hole shot.
They just don't like 300+ Horse Power being poured on them all at once.

Note the two different metals where it is Fushion welded together.
