Does anyone have any tips on how to remove press-in check valves, specifically the bottom most at the bottom of the crankshaft(with the powerhead still on the mid)? The motor is a 1990 175HP Mercury Carb.
Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks.

They're a pain in the butt and usually get ruined when you pull them out. You can thread the hole and replace them with a screw in from an older 1977 175. DO NOT HEAT THEM, They have a plastic ball inside.

It is defective and I am replacing it, so it can get ruined. What is the best tool to get in there? A long nosed vise grips? I read somewhere that I might be able to tap on a chisel lightly on the base of the valve and move it side to side to knock it out or at least loosen it up.

I got it out. I used a small pry bar and tapped it with a hammer lightly and it popped out. Thanks for the replies.
