I read on buy and sale lots of time people wanting to know if a engine was fenicked or rechromed. Seem like people want to shy away from that, is a refurbished block not 100% back within speck? Does a recoated not hold up?

Nicasil is a coating that is put on the 260's, 280's and 300 drag motor's. It is to transfer heat at the higher rpm's those motor's run at. These motors can be renicked and be just as good as they are when new. If you are dealing with a nicasil motor the only place to send it to is Jim Ruck, he sends the block to US Chrome to have them done. The block's are bored first and then the last few thousandth's are added in the nicasil process. Hope this answer's your question.

The EPA cracked down on the chrome process.. US Chrome doesn't rechrome cylinders anymore...
Nic is the only option now.. In other words if you have a old 2.4 chrome bore, and needs plating. Nic is it!!!!!!!!

Nicasil was patented by Mahle and was put on Bridgeports and early 2.5's up to somewhere around 94-95. After that coating was done in the US by US Chrome and called NiCom. I was told Nicasil tended to last longer than Nicom so may be the reason original plating is more desirable? Nicasil is nickle-silicone coating and Nicom is nickle-chrome coating, each are supposed to be durable, low friction, and good for heat transfer. I may have been told BS but that is what I was told.

The waste disposal of the heavy metals from the plating process is very expensive and paperwork intensive. Most of the plating plants have put out of business by the EPA and moved overseas.

The number 1 government agency I would like to see put out of business is the EPA

NiCom still has Silicon Carbide in it and/or possibly a couple of other components and is more durable than chrome coatings. And yes the Ruck-US Chrome connection is a good one.

Good info. Were the early 260's Chrome or Nic?
