Thanks, thats the first time I've seen reeds that didn't have seperate "fingers" on them.....are these worth using?...

Would they work well on the 4 petal, rubber coated reed cages?

I have a set in my sled, it has rubber coated blocks and the work great. First time I have seen them for a boat engine.

Had them in a few motors, did'nt like them.

Just off the top of my head that design looks "heavy" which would slow down their response to pressure.

I have Boysen reeds in an older Johnson 140 and I swear it does they say...better idle and about 100-200 rpm better up top. It's a very different motor though - RPM only hits 5400 and the cages are aluminum which I trued before installing the reeds. I also cleaned casting flash out of the intake manifold come to think of it at the same time so who knows what benefit the reeds actually had... All I can tell you is that they didn't make it poorly that's for sure.

They are 2 stage reeds so they are designed like that on purpose, first pair is a little stiff for low speed and as rpm increases the second reed opens - that's how they claim to have better and low and high range operation.

Why?
I wondered how they would work in a boat as far as bottom end response ie. from a 700rpm idle. My sled idles at 1700-1800rpm and response is good as is the rest of the power band, but allways kinda thought they could be a bit boggy from a lower rpm take off.

The upper reed "flap" always ended up standing open after a few hours and causing idle issues. Had much better luck with TDR reeds.

I have not been pleased with my Boysens. They curl/warp and don't seal. I'll probably put the factory ones in the next time I have it apart.

I have a set in my 2 liter Merc. They are great b/c they were free but I wouldn't give ya 10 dollars for em if I had to buy em. Lots of hesitation when ya stab the pedal hard but they get the job done i suppose.

From what I remember, the yellow (Mercury OEM style) Boyesens last much longer than the black ones.
