Mercury for the V-4's and up,but 2clylinder and 3 clyinder OMC's are the best in that range expecially the 2clyinder 50.

Anything that works. I got the Merc1500, a Chryco Force 85, Ford V-8 I/O, a Rude and a Wards-both tiny OBs for rowboats, or blowing mud:) They all have good points and bad, depending on what you need, but I'll take anything that gets the job done. Obviously all the hipo stuff for Mercs is nice if you want to go fast:)

I collect old motors. I probably have almost 40. Most are old 10 & 18 hp Johnsons and Evinrudes.

DID OMC MAKE THESE FOR PRODUCTION?

Last summer a guy bought a 2 cyl 55 Johnson. We stripped the boat and cut it into chunks for the landfill. He put it on his pontoon, and it seems to run nice and is very quiet. I think he got it all for $300. Still has the trailer. I helped him make a higher mount for it, water was flying all over with it too deep. It is that dark green and white, fair condition, and does not have that bulging flywheel like that one. Has twin carbs, I idled all the way down the lake fiddling with them. Now it idles really slow. Might not have much compression for all I know. Think he has a 11p prop on there now for that tub! He does not seem to understand his 2 log 16' pontoon is not going to go fast no matter what.

airide18
12-22-2002, 09:17 PM
No those carbs were modified from a v-6 to fit my 1987 50 block,it gained about 8hp with the modification.

sho305
12-22-2002, 10:44 PM
Yah, those carbs are for sure bigger than the 55 had on it:D :D :D

airide18
12-23-2002, 12:16 PM
I wish they came like that,it would of taken less work.:D

sho305
12-23-2002, 05:18 PM
Should I keep an eye on that 55? Not sure if he will keep it or not. I told him he needs one of those pontoons with the trihull under it if he wants to go fast. It actually had a crack in the top of the motor, maybe it froze or something and water was dripping out. Could have been a gasket too. We JB welded it a little and it stopped. Runs great though, but is a longer shaft. I never knew they had a 55 twin. I pulled the water pump and it was new in there. I other words, I could get it pretty cheap if he decides to dump it.

WHATCH OUT FOR THE NEW OMC MOTORS
MACH FAST!!!

QUICKSILVER

I perfer omc but have and had some good mercs. Hans hit the nail on the head watch for the new 2003 fichts these are impressive. Merc should put more time in the optimax. They were smart in that when they started having problems last year they stopped production and went to others for the solution corrected it and came out with the 250xs. Had omc done the same it might still be here. Watched a secret film on mercs new 4stroke. It is gonna be a mightmare if it breaks and I think salt conditions like here could bring a disaster to mercury. The future of direct injected 2strokes if getting brighter with time in that both bom and merc are angling towards performance. Rick

YES your right merc is a good motor BUT the new omc
just are so refined (finaly) for 2003
JUST lets see H.O are going to handle!!! (I going to run three in 2003)
just think they built a the best sleds (rotax)
fastest (pwc)
these are some points to ponder on!!!
