Any body mess with wildcatting? If so what do ya have, and what's your favorite load? I'm in the process of building a 22-243, it's gonna be a smoker.

6 PPC USA based on the 220 Russian, but thats not really a wildcat these days just can't buy loaded ammo easily, not a barn burner but a nice shooting round. 17 Mach IV based on the 221 Rem Fireball, fun little varmint cartridge, had to slow it down from 4300 cause the cases would only take 2 loadings before the primers were loose. Too much work to make the cases for a tight chamber to only use them twice. Was in the process of starting a .20 Benchrest based on the 6 BR, but then I bought a boat and well the project is still waiting......Thought about a 22-243, that would be a fun one, should be accurate also.....

I've never done any but I've though about some day rebarreling my Win M70 to shoot 6.5-06.

Only wildcatting I do now is make 338 Edge cases from 300 Ultra Mags. Biggest pain we ever did was a 280 Ackley Improved. I like the simple neck up or neck down rounds like the Edge. When you get into moving the shoulder it's more trouble than it's worth
If any of y'all are ever interested in building a long range or benchrest rifle pm me

And I thought a "wildcatter" was some one that chases "cougars". ;)

I havent formed any new cases, but I have experimented with load combinations that there is no data for.
I called this one 45/70ACP. A 45/70 case loaded with a paper patched 200gr lead swc for a 45ACP. I got 2500fps out of a single shot NEF Handi-rifle with no barrel leading and decent accuracy.
The other one is a 444 Marlin case with the rim turned down to chamber in a 410 shotgun. I shoot 40 cal pistol bullets out of it. The limitation is the stregnth of the 410 shotgun and that its a smoothbore. One of my future projects will be to chamber a Mauser action with a 40 cal barrel in 410 shotgun. The reason for this is that in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts you can't hunt deer with a rifle.
What kind of velocity do you expect from your 22-243? I'm guessing 4300-4400fps.

Pretty cool little projects you got going. Awesome idea on the shotgun/rifle deal for deer. That would drive a game warden nuts. :D
4300-4400 is pretty easily attainable with 50-60 grain stuff without to many case problems, I know a couple of guys that have gotten close to 5000, it really burns the barrels down though. I can also go to the 70-80 grain stuff and still be over 4000. I'm having a muzzle brake cut on the barrel, not for the recoil but for the noise. You wouldn't believe the annoying "crack" these things make.

One of my favorites is a 300gr hollow point (a 45/70 bullet meant to fly at 1800-2200fps) loaded in a 458Win. Mag. A full case of IMR4198 for a velocity of about 2700fps. The 300gr hp acts like a varmint bullet and absolutly vaporizes water jugs. Words really can't do it justice.

I haven't shot much in the last few years but this thread and reading those articles about the long range stuff has me wanting to mess with it again. I've shot a good bit at 1000 yds. Still would like to go to 1 mile but it'll be hard to find a place around here to do it
A 22-243 will be quite the little barrel burner

300 grainers @ 2700 is no joke, and I'm sure any shooter's shoulder could attest to that unless it's braked..

Yep, those big grain bullets at speed are too rough on me, I guess I'm gettin' old.

My Dad starting getting retinal damage in his eye from heavy recoilers in his late 50's... Funny, on some internet boards I hear guy's griping about recoil from .40 s&w's, compact .45's and such... They just don't know what a heap of powder behing a chunk feels like...

No brake, but my 458 does have a bull barrel (1 1/8 dia.). I found that the trick to shooting a heavy recoiling rifle is to either shoot it offhand or if shooting from a bench (especially for load development) have everything raised up high enough so that you are sitting upright and not leaning into it and taking it with the top of your shoulder.

I always tend to gravitate towards big guns but they have to be braked. I learned my lesson on recoil in my early twenties. Anything bigger than a 300 Win Mag is just unpleasant in a reasonable weight rifle. I really want to build a 375 CheyTac. Buddy of mine built one last year
