I have a 1979 2.4 offshore lower unit.It has less than fifty hours since new.Its been in the basement since 1980.Just this year i dug it out put on a bobs nose and trim tab i plan to run it on a v-king with a 28-30 cleaver. The motor is a 2.4 seven petal, drag ported and very strong in the mid range. My question is how weak are the older units. Will this propshaft and carrier hold up to a surfacing prop. This has the preload pin on the drive shaft and 187 gears. Is their a better carrier ect that would be worthwhile.Or just leave as is and watch for metal in the oil. What is the best gear lube for these?

Just don't go wave jumping and it should be ok for a while.... I don't know if there is a better carier, but you definately want to pin the carrier....

There is a heavy duty carrier, don't know if it was a Merc part or aftermarket. The early ModVP and bridgeports used those LUs and were OK, but their not as durable if run high.
