We used to make choppers out of them. Take a 5' long piece of pipe, one for each fork, and flatten the ends of them to hold the front wheel on, drive the other end of the pipe onto the forks and away you go. Just pray the pipes didnt fall off or you would do a face plant.....OOOOO, the days of inventions.....and being cool. The longer the pipes/forks....the better.
Apple Crate, wish I still had it, saw one go for $3,200.00

Cheater slick tire. Oh man, the neighbor kid had one of those on his bike and I was so jealous. My gramma bought me one from a yard sale that was all weather checked and it ruptured out the sidewall about a week after I got it. I gave up on the dream in 5th grade...

Schwinn Stingray was the deal when I was tearing up the sidewalk in the 60s..... Ape hangers and bananna seat with the cheater slick, metalflake paint was too cool.

Yep....... Been there, done that too!
also used a couple of playing cards and a clothes pin on the frame by the wheel spokes for a cool exhaust sound.

Got one of these when they first came out, was Met Red with white lettering. The springs on the rear of the seat worked, but the small ft tire made for bad steering didn't take much to go over the bars. Extending the ft forks made it real hard to turn.

Man....and I thought we were the only ones who did this! That really hurt when on of those pipes would fall off and you would go end over end. My dads buddy was a welder and would tack-weld the pipes on the end of the forks so we would'nt get hurt. My neighbor also had a bike with the slick and a steering wheel....we thought he was the KING!!! Later, Dave

I would go as far as to cut forks off of old bikes and put them together to make a chopper, you could change them around to make it set up high or set down low.

Did the same thing! Had 3 sets welded on and it looked cool and all, but holy hell you couldn't ride it very fast.

Great pic Al! Schwinn Stingray with the drag slick rear tire - so awesome! Those bikes can wheelie forever.
Who remembers the Ross Apollo 5-Speed? This was Ross' very popular version of the Stingray with the frame-shifter. The only time I ever saw one in person was when I was in kindergarten and I remember seeing one at the bike racks before I went into school. Don't ask how I remember that. Note the dual-shifters - they look strangely similar to the older Evinrude Simplex shifter of the very same era.
This bike is not mine - just found the pic on the web.
