View Full Version : Fuel Cell ?
What is the scoop on using a foam filled fuel cell for outboards, like the ones sold through summit or jegs ? would the foam cause problems with the oil seperating from the fuel to some extint or any other problems ? randy

we pull the foam out of any cells we use. have had problems with the foam coming apart and clogging the fuel system.
not sure about why maybe the alcohol in todays fuel or??? it does happen though so pull it out.

For circle racing we leave the foam in. Never had a problem. We have Jaz cells. No complaints here, never had foam come apart. If in doubt, replace the foam every now and then, its cheap.

I use the Tempo tanks like what is sold by all marine dealers and add foam from Jaz. Took out some 5 year old foam and no deterioration. Am putting new back in. Foam can not seperate the oil because the gas- oil is a chemical bond.

It could be the quality of foam that you use. I know we've never had a problem with Jaz products. Anyone have specific problems with them, or another brand of foam?

i have used jaz cells for years and never had any probs, in my cars which we use alchoal, i would not think that oil would break it down, i aggree with brian, dont think you should have any probs just buy a good quality foam from a good co.
I was on the JAZ website and I noticed they said there foam was "aircraft quality" I asume it meets a higher standard, some of the other manufacturers don't say anything on there foam as far as quality. Thanks for the replies. RANDY

RSM:
You shouldn't have any trouble with foam with gas, unless your
local supplier/station uses gas with a high alcohol content.
I've discussed this with the manufacturer of my fuel cells (RCI).
They say that problems could occur with alcohol or nitro methane.
Alcohol is a solvent.
So, I do run foam in my EFI fuel tank, which is normally 75% Cam
2/25% pump premium (93 oct). The concept of foam is of course to
stabilize the fuel at high Gs (acelleration, high speed turns, rough
water, etc.).
I do not use foam in my alcohol fuel cell, which I use as enrichment fuel for my N20 system.
It's always a good idea to change ALL your fuel filters annually.
The WORST thing you can do to a 2-stroke is run it lean!

But just for the first fuel filter. Then it was OK. It was like there were some loose particles floating around in the tank. If you remove the foam and blow it out first, you should be OK. I don't think I would use the foam with alky though.
