I had gotten this boat on a trade last fall.

The only thing I was after was the motor to put on my deck boat but I changed my plans for the deck so my neighbour ended up getting it from me. He's puting the motor on another boat and it looks like I'm getting the flat bottom back minnus a motor.
I'll have to find motor with a 15" mid and do some restoration on the transom.

Conventional wisdom was that 140 on a 17 J was enough of a handful, but the factory guys had one with a 150 V6 that they told me went 72. That was a long time ago, when I was talking to everyone I could about J's and looking to buy one.
Somewhere Sean will disagree with me, but I see J's as ski boats, not top end boats. Put a strong V4 on it and go skiing.
I've never seen one that needed a 15" mid, but maybe the 16 is different.

The transom had some 'custom' mods that I really don't care for...

And This poor little ski boat was confused for a bass boat, electric troling motor and all.

Start fixing her up. Get rid of the built up transom. Start looking around here for some 15" Merc inline parts and put here together period correct. You will have a cool little ride! Keep us informed!

I can get my hands on an early 70's short shaft 100 merc.
I just don't think that would be enough ponys to keep me happy.
I was also wandering if anybody here knew if these came rigged with OMC's or Mercs from the steelerships???
I'm having a hard time finding any info on this thing.
And just out of curiosity, how much weight difference can there be between a v4 and a v6 (140 vs. 150hp)
thanks for any and all info guys...

93 Johnson Brochure
Your V4 crossflow 301 lb
2L V4 looper carb 365 lb
2.6L V6 carb 370 lb
3L V6 carb 450 lb
Any random old school Merc v6 would be around 400 lb
There are not a lot of 16 J's around. They sold a lot of 17's and 19's until they went broke around 93 and since then it has just been 19.
Most are used for water skiing. Sean who used to post here as Flatout, runs just over 80 with a 225 on a 19' J.
