I'm going to install a new more powerful motor on the winch for my marine railway. I want to have a low voltage remote control for up and down operation, either wired or wireless. Wireless preferred!

Two part question - what kind of components do I need for the control (relays, low voltage), and does anyone know of an adaptable kit that I could make the control wireless?

I need a project obviously!

I have wireless remote for my boat lift 220 volt and Gem remotes .com makes it works great check out there site. Good luck Eric

I looked at their stuff, it's nice but I want to make my own. Looking more for ideas for a home made solution.

Get a small VFD that will give you forward/stop/reverse and tie it into a wireless kill switch like I put on my two four-year-old Grandson's Yamaha PW50s.

The switch would be wired to the VFD terminal board's C to F terminal for forward run and have a reversing switch to make it trigger C to R for reverse. The drive could set the speed that you want the winch motor to operate at from the VFD's keyboard.

What is a VFD?

vairable frequency device aka a rheostat, speed controller, ya know like on a wall switch for a house light or on the end of that thing in the drawer on the other side of the bed lol

You could probably adapt a hobby-type R/C device to accomplish the task.

www.carymart.com, two three pole contactors and a little ingenuity. Sorry, can't upload the diagram

LOL I found Carymart this afternoon and was looking at contactors on ebay after a short chat with an electrician at work. I think this is how I will go.

What is a VFD?

It's a variable frequency drive, and it can also serve as an inverter if you have a 3 phase motor but only 1 phase supply voltage... It regulates the hertz of the electricity going into the motor for a nice speed control, and can act as a soft start due to how low it can be dialed down...

In regard to a remote start, my job never requires me to do a set-up like that but can undoubtedly be done... Like Pyro stated the RC world uses remote-to-motor technology endlessy, and you can also consider that an electric garage door opener w/remote is the same principle...

I don't really want a speed control as the winch runs at a good speed right now. The old motor runs at 1725 too, into a 45:1 worm drive gearbox. I have the cable running out and back through a pulley as well to reduce strain on the cable so it runs pretty slowly. That's good because I move pretty slowly. :)

I was looking at the Carymart stuff, do you think any of those would work without a contactor? I know a garage opener uses this type of switching but I'm using 6X the motor.

This one looks like it might work.

Says the controller can handle 300W at 220, pretty sure that's not enough for a one hp motor. This could work with a contactor though right?

A motor is an inductive load that has a large inrush current until the stator is fully saturated with the magnetic field. Most contactors have two ratings, a amperage rating for resisitve loads and a horsepower rating for inductive loads. Clear as mud?

Clear as can be. You need some big f#&%ing Square D relays.

Yes that makes sense. Then if a contactor is rated for 1 hp it will work for me.

Is this for contactors? If so does he have used stuff?
