Cheap cruises leaving sonoma this month, plenty of room in the pool, starboard cabins have glass floor with underwater view!

I saw that. I'd just as soon be dragged down a gravel road then to spend the night on one of those things!!! F that! :nonod:

There seems to be only three main things to do, get drunk, lose money and overeat [all day/night] while the boat sails around in circles between ports.....I was "cured" after one cruise...

Another one of the things we agree on. Imagine spending precious holiday time on a crowded ship, queuing up for everything and eating out of a trough. I'll rent a house or apartment thx!

Not to mention catch every friggin' nasty virus/sickness known to man........... more people come back sick than not it seems. In this case some will not be coming home at all. Tragic event

I'll have to disagree ;) I've done several and the good ones were the best vacations I've had. By the pool on the top deck watching islands go by while be waited on, a different port/island to explore every day or so, cell phones don't work etc. The big ones have a dozen or so bars/restaurants to suite your taste and open when ever you're ready. I love them and the Mrs and I are planning or next.
On this wreck though, it's getting ugly fast! Either 5 or 11 confirmed dead and 24 more missing that are probably dead as well. Report is that the captain made a close pass to the shore (1/2 mile off course) line so he could honk at a buddy  The cruise line said that the ship is set up to automatically sound an alarm when the ship is off course and that the captain would have had to of disabled it!
Reports are that the crew A. told passengers all was well and to stay put while ship was sinking and B., jumped ship before the passengers did
Reports also say the captain was one of the first off! He is in jail for man slaughter among other things at this point and that list will grow.
They released audio today between he and the Coast Guard. The captain was in a life boat behind the ship while the Coast Guard is YELLING at him to get back in the ship to help the passengers :nonod::icon_bs: At one point the Coast Guard crew member is making sure the captain understands that this is all on tape and he (Coast Guard) will nail his ass.
Of course now even while they are still looking for 24 missing people the risk of environmental damage from fuel spill is making bigger news than those lost.
Welcome to our world.
Also, this is a smaller cruise line owned by Carnival. Would not have happened on one of the big boys. Those guys are big fun to watch get those giant ass ships in/out of tiny ports and spend yrs trying to get on a ship like this one.

We went on one with about 20 people we knew, had a blast! Spent a few days on it and never remembered going back to my room :D. Drove dune buggys in cozumel, hung out in the pool all day till we were asked to leave :D Fun stuff plenty of talent!

Went on two last year with Royal Caribbean and loved every bit of it! Even got engaged on the first one. We are planning one for this summer to take the kids on and I can't wait!
As for this, the captain should be held accountable for his actions! I bet there will be many more crew members thrown under the bus before it is over, there had to have been people with the authority to tell the captain he was being an idiot doing what he was doing....

I agree with Instagator - they are fun, I have always had offshore boats and did my own thing to the Bahamas and stuff. I took my first one at 40 something and really had a great time. I also did the dune buggy's Baja and that was a fun adventure, you can just get places you can't take your own boat.
The Capt is screwed, he abandoned ship - in the recorded chat with the CG - they wanted an accessment of people still on board - he said all his officers were with him in the rescue boat - sweet

I can't believe 500,000 gallons of fuel. Do they fuel up on the trips? Hope the lost make it home!

I don't understand how a person of such a pompous and selfish nature could've been chosen for a job of such gravity (strange parallels to the U.S.)... If I had the job and obligation of protecting thousands of people from a horrible death at sea, I'd be a robot hell bent on not letting a single thing fall not one inch out of protocol if at all possible..
I think he needs to be held to the fire by the full extent of the law, and his face and name needs to be put in every class and textbook for every student to see when aspiring for a career in the maritime industry...

Pretty sure you're going to see exactly that. Every time Fox covers the story they show him getting in a police car.
Bajamerc, talent...........never seen more/better anywhere!! Remember one paticular cruise w/a certain Columbion woman that brought the entire ship to a grinding halt everyh were she went and was one of very few woman I've seen that wears a thong well ;) Yikes! Oh yeah, topless top deck on that ship too.
Yeah, cruises suck ;)

A friend of mine knows the family of the MN couple missing. Sad deal.
I'm with Forkin and JR. Don't think I could enjoy it at all. Very sad situation that should never have happened. I saw the pics of the a hole ripped in the hull and couldn't hardly believe it. One report I heard said 2400 tons of fuel on board which is about 800,000 gallons. Hope they get that pumped off before it pollutes the area.

Definitely not for every one.
I know for me though I still remember my first one 20 yrs ago. Was my first vacation that I returned home completely relaxed/recharged and ready to return to work. Usually you're so busy planning, driving, loading, unloading, scheduling, paying tabs etc, etc. On a cruise, they do everything for you and you enjoy the ride. No drinking and driving, no marathon road trips, changing hotels etc.
Last couple I've done I chose because they spent multiple days at sea. Ships have everything, why get off?
Seen ancient Myan ruins in Mexico, dove amazing ship wrecks in the Caribbean, seen the most amazing shore lines ever, met the most basic/humble island people that teach you about life (if you let them) etc. One life lesson from a humble islander that had a "cab company" that we were using. His "company" was the mini van we were in ;) Stopped at his office to buy beer for the trip. That was the kitchen of his two room house! On the way there the guy was just beaming about his young soon who was going to take over the business from him. Proud like only a father can be. We're back in the van when he returns w/his young son of about 13 or so. The kid had Cerebal Palsy and could never walk let alone drive a van and Dad was carrying him! The proud Papa loaded him in the front seat where he drove and junior shifted gears when he told Dad to push in the clutch! I was riding shot gun and turned around to make sure the rest of our crew had just witnessed this amazing event. The tears in their eyes showed they had.
Used to get up every morning and go on top deck w/a coffee to watch the sun come up while hanging over the rail.
After one wreck dive in Cozumel we returned to a local Mexican restaurant before the ship left. Was a very quiet place w/few patrons also quiet and minding their own business. We ended up joining a local tradition of shots of Tequilia. They put a pith helmet on your head, tilt your chair back, slam the shot on your helmet (which was aluminum and full of dents!) and then pour it down your throat! We all pourtook ;)
Before we left, EVERYONE in the restaurant was dancing including the staff! The best was the chef who came out of the kitchen, put on the helmet, did a shot and then danced on the table! He spoke no English but didn't have to!
Some times trips are what you make of them. I tend to have fun.

50 bars on board but we always took the long way through the topless deck :p to the stern bar which was conveniently located down a flight of stairs by the big water slide :D. You would think there would be the whole take the good with the bad scenario on the topless deck but I couldnt find any bad  hahaha! We dove thats the first time I found out a hangover disappears once your over 30ft down. We also watched the sun come up but we werent drinking coffee
I cant wait to go on another! Everyone who says they hate them hasnt been on one

Use to go on cruises with a few of the boys back when I was a green sailor mainly for the puzzie. There were specific ones that were mainly a 30 and under crowd. Always went all inclusive after making the mistake on the first one of not going all inclusive and having a $1500 booze bill.
Done the one that Instigator went on about four times (Western Carribean) and it was always awesome. But the first cruise is an expensive learning experience, ie....all inclusive, smuggle liquor as you can not but it in bottles on the ship, dont bother with the balcony as your never in your room and NEVER book excursions because when you get ashore they are begging you to go on them for half price and bring your own snorkeling gear.
