We have been cutting down 20" mid-sections in house for a few years now.
We have several customers running our mids both in racing and pleasure with much success.

Stock 20" straight leg cans are cut, milled, welded then we add straps to the inside for added strength to prevent cracking.
We can do straight leg, and offshore cans both smooth and ridgeback style.
All cans are finished off cosmetically, painted with base coat and then a clear coat

We rough cut all housings then fixture both pieces on the mill to surface the mating surfaces for a good true fit. The housings are then fixtured in a jig for proper driveshaft alignment.
All welding is TIG
Swivel brackets are machined on mill then we install a new lower swivel shaft bushing in the bottom.
We remove the top motor mount (tiller) arm, index for spline alignment, shorten the shaft and re-attach the arm with welding.
We will also cut your water tube, shift shaft and can have your driveshaft cut and re-splined
All work done in house except driveshafts.

Price for cutting and finishing is $700.00-$750.00 plus shipping back to you. Driveshaft cutting will be extra.

Call us for details at Calhoun Marine 803-897-3806 Mon-Fri 9-5 est. If no answer or after hours call 803-539-4908

We have several mids we are working on now that will be up for sale when completed, we can cut yours or send you one done and you send us a core.

We also build custom swivel brackets for those looking for lighter weight applications they can be done in 12" and 15" versions. The brackets take the place of the heavier Merc clamp and swivel bracket assemblies and are a tremendous weight savings. The 12" versions a little longer than the Merc Champ mids but give the ease of a shift shaft without drilling the rams in a champ mid. These are approximately the same weight as the champ mids when complete. We cut the big single trim cylinder to fit the bracket and will install new fittings on hoses for hook up to the trim pump. These brackets are custom tailored for your needs.
The 15" models are much lighter than the Merc 15" offshore. I'll post individual weights here soon. Call for details and pricing on the custom brackets.

15" custom bracket shown with cut down straight leg can. Trim cylinder mounts inside where you see the holes machined in the side of the bracket. This unit has the set back incorporated into it which eliminated the weight of the jack plate. This boat had a 15" Merc offshore mid section with a 12" jackplate, after converting to this set up we removed 70 lbs. of weight off the transom!!!

12" custom bracket unfinished, this version is for fixed trim, the same bracket can incorporate a trim cylinder, this version also is for wing plate and cable steering. We have other versions in the works for mechanical cable steering as well as hydraulic, available in 15" also.

This fixed trim bracket weighs 20 lbs.

15" custom bracket with vertical adjustment incorporated, eliminates the jack plate.

Cutting and finishing the housing is no problem. Sometimes you run into a clearance problem with the forward area of the housing that extends forward below the bottom motor mount yoke and the bottom of the 3 ram trim assembly. There are ways of doing it though. Prices include painting and clear coat. Driveshaft shortening isnt a problem either. Feel free to call and we'll dicuss it.

We have not done any custom clamp/swivel brackets for anything other than a 2.0/2.4/2.5 style driveshaft housing as of yet. But I have plans to do the brackets for other models and brands as soon as I can. We have orders for cut down standard mids and custom clamp brackets for the smaller V6 Mercs we have got to get done first. I can build most anything to fit most anything!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the compliment on out work Robbie!!

Merc "skeletonized" custom 15" clamp/swivel with set back and propshaft height incorporated. Total weight with Merc shorty trim cylinder is 23lbs. Customers existing OEM 15" offshore clamp/swivel and Allison jackplate was 87lbs. This version is for wingplate and cable steering on an Allison Drag....

The top plate on the swivel bracket is set on an angle to allow for the height alignment of the wingplates once there on the tuner plate. It allows the "axle" of the pulley to rotate perfectly in line with the pivot point so no slack develops in the steering cables when trimmed up or tucked under....

We're looking into that the adapter has to come back off and we gonna see if we can fit the bolts up in the hole before the plate goes back on. We may have to make a slight change to it. This is the first one of it's type. Should be a minor change. Worst case scenario studs can be fit into the bottom of the block and then use nuts like on a Merc. We used that method on a Yamaha powerhead before.

I want to give a big thanks to Michael Chapman and Calhoun Marine. They modified my 20in mids on my 300xs's to 15in mids. They turned out great and Michael went out of his way to get me the parts before the end of the month! Thanks again for all your hard work. (attached are a few pics of the mids)

Mike have you figured out how to make a 20" mid from a 25" 3.0 mid? Im thinking its pretty much the same as making the 15 out of the 20 300xs.

M.CHAPMAN

First of all thanks to Don for the compliments and for allowing us to do the work!!!!! I'm glad you are pleased with them. Dad did a good job on them and they look great on that boat, Awesome ride you got there!!!!

As far as shortening the 25" cans down the only problem I see based on the one I have here is the way Mercury extended the housings below the motor mount area. I haven't had time to look and see if there's an efficient way of doing it. I'm not saying it's impossible just want to be able to do it correctly. The 20" to 15" is no problem at all on either of the 3 styles of housings from Mercury. As soon as I know I can do it and do it at an efficient cost to the customer I'll let you know.

I suppose worst case scenario we could cut a 20" swivel bracket as if we were going to install a 15" can on it.......then cut a 5" section out of the 25" can just like we would the 20" then let the extended area make up the 5" difference for a 20" shaft...then the swivel bracket would retrofit to a 15" can if the customer ever wanted to go shorter...all you would need is to cut down a 20" can to a 15"....!!

Hi Michael

I called 1st of the month about cutting a housing, I'm in Moncks Corner SC. Charlie Hunter gave me your number you did one for him. Yes you did call me back and left a message on my cell. thanks !! Did or do you do a Off shore exhaust Mod on a 20" cut down to 15 also. If so what would the extra charge be. Because I'm getting one done soon for my XR2002 Allison.
Yes you will be doing the job for me. Great work !

Len,
I try not to make a habit of cutting into the back of the stock cans to do an offshore style exhaust exit. Anytime you cut into the "backbone" area of those cans it can weaken them and cause cracks around the outside. When we cut a straight housing we add "straps" to the inside to strengthen it so by turning around a cutting the "backbone" kind of cancels that principle out.

We do however drill the exhaust exit holes in the floor plate area of the stock housings to match the way Mercury did it on the non-offshore style "straight leg" housings. That's all you really need from a performance stand point anyway.

Bobby,

Here's a pic of a ridgeback 20" cut to our custom 12", I don't have a pic on file of a 15" so try to imagine 3 more inches in it...this one is in mock up after the welding. The Ridgeback cans fit back together nicely after cutting and welding...we get an excellent bond of material for welding as well as putting some extra strapping inside like the stock cans.

We are currently not doing any 3 ram set ups here. We try and stick to the single ram systems...makes them more efficient to do and keeps the cost more affordable.

Curious: anyone done a 12" style with single ram trim and Sea-Star style steering and bolted it to an existing jackplate? I ask because my Mirage is far from light, and not sure if a 12" would work on a short setback. I've got 9" RapidJack already.
