How about getting a thread together on the various race or high perf motors OMC has made in the past? Stinger, Super Strangler, RS, Formula 1, SST, GT, etc, they were all great lookin motors and almost all of them were different designs and color schemes. My dad had an orange stinger back in the day and that thing drew attention everywhere we went, being the AW that I am, I have loved the special edition OMC motors ever since. :D
Maybe if we can get some pictures (and possibly some paint codes?) together in a single thread, it'll help the guys trying to build or restore these things.
Anyhow, my favorite race motor...

My favorite "hot" fishin motor is a toss up between the Fastrike eagle loopers and the White Heat Xflows, and I can't find a decent pic of either of them.:o

Hi,
There was two style cowlings in 1984..well three..Omc´s first one..like my boat # 8 or a more rounded one in the back like Molinari´s #18.
The one Molinari is using in this picture is a mix between OMC´s rounded and Renatos own design..

I know Roger was racing a factory OMC SE Clerici out of Bruges 1973.. Good guess Lars in early 1971 i was at the Omc factory in Brugge for a speed attempt ON class with Bill Shakespeare.I saw the 3 cyl Johnson outboards and asked head of Racing at that time John Tucker have you entered a race boat in the Rouen 24hr race next week` No was his reply `Would you like me to enter a Cat` Well yes`i telephoned a friend in Lincolnshire who had just built a small 13ft Cat.Arranged for him and another driver to take the boat to Belgium and the Factory fitted the engine. Now i was travelling to Rouen with Rodger Jenkins and his father and Peter Thorneywork who were to drive a Picton ski-boat with a Mercury 65hp fitted in the 24hr race.I still have John Tuckers Telegraph with our race no 61 dated 15th april 1971.

John Tucker asked me in 1970 if i would drive a factory boat with the 89cu inch v4 they were much slower than the 99cu v4 so i declined `i remember doing 130mph on that stretch of water in 1978. do you think any members would like to view the Shakespeare cat with 99cu v4 that held the ON speed record in 1970 cool engine for its time i can post a picture taken at lake Windemere ? http://svera.se/blogg/racing-historier/1978-i-raced-sd-z-on-and-the-oz-class/ I believe that boat was his first marathon boat he built i think OMC would have paid for it`i saw it at Brugge in storage in 1977.The 2.0 litre engine used was the hi-line engine the factory had at that time Cees had 4inches taken out of the centre section which was standard V4 stinger and the drive shaft shortened`the factory should have done this it lowered the centre of gravity.I think 1975 Paris was won by the Jeusseume brothers with the same 2.0litre v6.

For those that don't know, #55 is one Mr. Alan Stoker or as we know him here on the board......."RACER".
Three national championships and a general pain in the as to the Merc factory back in the Mod VP days. The Merc factory would send their race division race truck to the races to sell/lease powerheads and motors and hope Al and his dad didn't show up w/the family wagon and their home brewed team and kick all of their asses.
I have some great video of those races and been lucky enough to have met several of those Merc racers of the day and heard their stories of what went on behind the scenes to make sure Al didn't win.
They protested and tore down one of his motors that he never even got the block back from. No DQ, just didn't agree w/the out come ;)
Can't imagine having the stones to put up w/that crap weekend after weekend.

Hi Lars`that is the perfect picture to some up the team wars between Mercury and Omc.What a story lies waiting to be told is there anybody out there who is about to write all this history or who has already written it.From the Kiekhaefer days from the 6cyl inlines to the T4 engines. And Omc`s V4s/V6s Rotaries it
would need several peoples input soon before they get any older. If this was the Automotive industry maybe they would have made a film about this already`who do you think could or would do this?.

So did most of the Merc drivers when OMC had the V-8. I wrote the rotary side of the story some time back. Its on both this site and BRF; search wankel rotary. I have asked Jim several times to write the 3-cyl, V-4, V-6, V-8 history, but so far he hasn't at least published it. He doesn't have a lot of love for OMC after how they treated him. Can't say I blame him either. It would be nice to have the inside history from the 60's, 70's and 80's before the people invloved are gone or like me can't remember some things.

The OMC V4 from the GT/X115 through the years of the Super Strangler/Stinger GP were the engines that powered the heyday of OPC racing.
For me and a lot of people I know, the triples and 6s never had the same appeal. I always loved the howl....

Always wanted to drive one of those. Most of the guys w/big power have no idea how fast and fun one of those things can be.
Two equations come to mind.
#1. Hp to weight ratio :)
#2. Fun per $

Fred,
It's manners are a lot better around the dock and at idle. Where we were running it you have no wake zones and could not just pin it and go. Ran just like the 75 Stinger regarding her running characteristics. Gas and spark synchronized real good at low end.

If Dave Bush can make 450hp with a 3.3 v6 on pump gas at 7500rpm there is plenty of margin for a v8 to be higher.

I can only say I did 1/4 mile with my 3 cyl, but won almost every single race against inline mercs, v-4 looper omcs on allisons and any bass or jet boat they paired me with!!!!!!
keep the pictures and the stories coming...the story about the racing buddy, that lent you the prop that was "your" prop is what racing was all about for me!!!!
I remember one time our nitrous bottle had a problem so we went to a blown fuel nitrous arias hemi drag boat owner and asked to borrow his nox bottle. He said wheres your drag boat???? we pointed over to the 12 footer and he said your kidding, but did walk over and he saw we were squirting , for real....he lent us his tank and he and the crew came up to the starting line to watch the low class little outboards....... and we pulled another guy that had a jet boat with a 454 chevy in it, and won the race.....about 50 people came over to our pit to take a look at the little boat that beat the big jet!!!! what a great fun day.......we ran a seebold 25 inch cleaver and it turned 8500 rpm with the open exhaust and the modified sst 60 gearcase.....abou 84 mph...

In that era when pickle fork boats had already hit the scene it amazes me that they ran those powerhouse engines on closed bow tunnels. I believe that the Scotti boat was one of the last and best of that type.

This picture was taken by Si Metcalf in Provo Utah; Tommy Posey. The boats were always an issue with the rotary engine. They just weren't developed to take that kind of power and speed. Got to hand it to the drivers who drove the beast.
John,
Did the rotary require a shorter transom height than the V4? If so, do you remember how much shorter.

No. V-4, V-6 & Rotary were all the same. It just looks shorter because the engine was droped below the transom; Charlie Strang idea/ patent.

I'm not a big rotary fan, but if there is a great application for one, it's an outboard. Shame they never had more development, would be nice to see what one could do with updated designs, casting/material technology, and direct fuel injection. :reddevil:

I remember that well. Was actually on "Wide World of Sports" if you can imagine that. I have a picture some where of then interviewing Jimbo and Bill Muncey before the race at the stadium. Amazing stuff to be sure. Maybe as close as boat racing came to actually being accepted by the main stream.

Will do. I have another of the two of them and one of the OMC PR guys in front of Jimbos rotary powered "Goat Boat" during a press event. I can scan them but I am having no luck uploading to photobucket any more. Been exchanging e-mails w/their tech people for the last month and keep getting the same canned response. Yep, I remember I think 4 in one yr. Imagine that power and weight on an open cockpit boat designed for a 2.4 Champ motor with ZERO safety concern. Remember too this was back in the long course days when we had real straightaways instead of todays circle courses. I want to say Cincinati was a 3 mile coure the yr I went ('89?). I think they were reporting speeds in the mid 140's at the entry pin's.
Also in the era when we still believed in the driver being thrown from the boat was the safest thing. This black era helped educate us on what was actually killing the driver and got us to start strapping them in and then came safety cells.
If I could ever get my photobucket acct. to work again I'd scan a picture Jimbo Mcconnell sent me from the early days and the boat can't be more than 17'. Scary just to look at and what ended his career and almost his life.
One of my buds up in Ohio still has this monster. Has been on radar at 141 and the stinkin thing has the sprint bottom  About a 450lb hull. I coaxed him/it out of the barn some time ago after much effort. It's owner once told me that every time he gets in it it trys to eat him!
I've had a ride in it and never felt that much acceleration water or on land.
Maybe the scariest/most dangerous O/B on the planet.

The reason I asked is in a couple of the series of pictures of Walin's accident the lower unit looks very long and thin. Those pictures were taken with a long lens and motor drive and I only saw the lower unit in one publication just after it happened. I was sitting in a barber shop and the pics were in Life or Look magazine. Since then all the pics I have seen of that accident do not show the lower unit.

The site is not allowing me to post pics as a paying member whick ticks me off but I think you are correct. I think that when Evinrude went from the 1972 Starfire 125 to the 1973 introduction of the Starfire 135 they ALSO offered a model known as the 135 Strangler. I think that was effectively a recreational motor, offered only in 1973, and just painted different colors, blue and white. In the same year I believe 1973, they started offering the full race versions, the Super Strangler's and the Johnson Stinger GP's. These two race models might have been introduced in 1972, but I believe it was 1973. Someone else will know for sure if it was 1972 or 1973 and how much HP they actually made.

You are referring to the "consumer" Strangler, which was a stock 135 and available in the 1974 and 1975 model years. This engine was a stock 20" shaft 135 with no power trim (that was an option, as it was on the standard Starflite 135). The Strangler had a blue and white paint job. This engine had very little in common with the race Strangler and Super Strangler. The Super Strangler (same as the Johnson Stinger GP with a different paint job) was first seen in OPC racing in 1972 and was produced until 1976, although "production" numbers are not known. The actual race Strangler/Stinger engines (model #KR-15m) were true racing engines; they had special blocks, porting, cranks, pistons, rods, flywheel, 8-barrel floatless carburetor, special exhaust tuning, heads, adapter with megaphone, centersection, clamp and swivel, up-down as well as in-out trim, and of course gearcases (clubfoot 14:23 ratio standard, smaller 1:1 ratio sprint optional). Nothing at all was shared in common with the production engines; even the pan and hood was different. The only similarity was that they were both 99.6ci V4 engines.

Thanks John for the clarification. I did not realize that the "Consumer" Strangler 135 was actually produced for both 1974 and 1975 model years, I had thought it was only a 1973 model. Makes sense that Evinrude would attempt to broaden there consumer market appeal but creating some "buzz" with nothing more then a different blue and white paint job on the 20" "Consumer" Strangler 135.

Definitely not. Everything was noise abatement & ecology by '74.
As far as I know there was only a pair of V-4 piped motors that OMC raced, Ted May, Ron Hill and Fred Hauenstien were probably the only drivers. Probably 1970-ish

Thanks. What kind of info can you guys provide on the Evinrude motor in the attached picture? I don't have a date on it but it looks to have a race mid and lower unit?

Thanks again, here are two photos of the "Consumer" 135 Strangler with the blue and white paint scheme.
The one on the left (actual photo of engine with steering bars) is my engine. I have it on a 1976 Allison R15 race boat. It is not a real 135 Strangler; only the cowling is really from a 135 Strangler, the rest of the engine is built from a lot of different parts. But it sure runs and looks good!!

That is a Starflite SS race engine, predecessor to the Super Strangler. It was essentially a 125 with porting and Strangler exhaust manifold, with a race centersection and gearcase. It had battery CD ignition same as the 125. Stern brackets were god-awful heavy cast iron. No trim or lift. Built from late 1968 to about 1972.

Thanks John, that is interesting and helpful. Is it possible that the Evinrude Starflite 125 SS race motor (pictured above) had an exhaust system that was "selectable" between the lower unit or the top exhaust tubes, or would that indicate a different race motor?

"Selectable" exhaust refers to a plate that was fitted to either the bottom of the cavitation plate or the back of the exhaust opening above the cavitation plate, allowing the exhaust to exit above the cavitation plate as in your picture in post #236 or exit below the cav plate toward the prop for quieter operation (as required for racing in Europe).
It is a function on all of the "X-115" gearshift units and the similar OMC "clubfoot" units

Thanks Mark. I'm trying to narrow down a particular motor. The owner feels it was perhaps a '73, '74, or '75 but the owner supplied the picture in post #236 which John describes as being a 1968-1972 Starflite SS 125, picture attached below from an Evinrude ad in 1970. The owner says the motor was actually a 135 but had the same "selectable" exhaust plate you mention. Would that selectable exhaust option have been available on a later '73, '74, '75 race motor?

Here is some more info on the '70's Evinrude race motor I am trying to ID from the owner ..........
"The engine was a 135 Evinrude modified by Jack Leek. The exhaust was a custom designed plate with Four exhaust pipes that tapered out like megaphones. Those engines have a plate in the back that the exhaust runs through and is diverted to exit though the prop. Jack machined a bolt on plate that allowed the exhaust to exit straight out the pipes or be directed thru the lower unit via a valve. The lower unit was a 1:1 and had a custom two blade prop for high speed but I mostly ran it with a three blade prop."
Check out this video at 1:15.

Holy Chit, is that an OMC V4 Jack Leek custom stacker on a 135? What year is that clip?

If it is 1970 you don't see many OMC stackers. I guess they aren't really stackers but more like megaphones out of a 135 Super Strangler.
