I can compare an SS2000 (sort of like a GS) to a Tuff 21 (similar to other SOB 21s). The 21 handles cruiser wakes much better than my SS.
HP for HP the Ally would be faster than the Checkmate, at least until you put a 300 on both.
If you want a boat that will run, buy the GrandSport. If you want a boat with room enough for a bunch of extra people you don't really like, but the Checkmate.

If your boating is in very calm water and you have no more than 4 people, the Allison would be a fun choice. If your faced with moderate surface chop, snotty 2' chop and have 5 people (or more with the bowrider), go with the Pulsare. They can handle rough water, the cockpit is larger, and you have the benefit of being able to crawl into the cabin where it's quite a bit larger than you would think!! Setup correctly with a 300xs and the boat will run 96+ MPH. Even a bone stock 3.0 225 will run upper 70's.

Maybe if you're comparing the 24' Check to the Allison, but not so much with the 21'. The 21' may ride a little better in the rough, but I'd be willing to bet I have as much or more room in my GS than a 21' Checkmate. It's the perfect family boat in anything less than 2' chop.
It's all in how fast you want to go, and what you're going to use it for. Yes, Randy has a 21' running 96, but that is squeezing every last mile out of it and playing with heights and props. A 225 ProMax on a GS will run that with minimal setup and it's not on the edge. (Probably get some chit on that statement) I will gaurantee the GS will get there a whole lot faster too.
Again, all in what you want. ;)

Allison all the way....
Allison has always been my favorite boat, there was a dealer a long time back in New Jersey and sat in one when I was a kid. Always wanted one since. Allison is my vote, never owned one but I did own 2 checkmates.
Allison GS all the way....I would only go for the Checkmate if it was a bowrider with a big engine and I wanted more people aboard, but if you want a full front deck and room enough for 3 more friends and better re sale value.......Allison.

Ziemer, I've been in both boats and the Checkmate Pulsare is larger than the Allison. You could easily sleep two people in the bow of the Pulsare longdeck and the cockpit is fairly wide. There is no doubt that the Allison is faster and lighter. The Checkmate hull weighs 1375 lbs. Both boats have a huge fun factor when driving at speed and require driver input to keep them balanced on the pad. The Mate will require alot more motor to match the speeds of the Allison...

Perfect example... Nelson bought a 21 Pulsare because he wanted a little bit bigger boat than the Allison for running in the Bay and Gulf being that he lived so close to the Salt. One day we were out on a lake together shortly after he got it and it was a windy, bumpy day. After taking my boat for a ride around the lake he put the Pulsare up for sale and bought a GS. Said "why give up speed and performance if it rides worse in rough water" 100% True story!

I 100% agree with your post !! Scott
Both great boats with +/-s. Buy a buddy some gas and go for a ride in each boat and see which boat best suits your family and needs. You can't go wrong with either model.
Cheers-

If you test drive the Grand Sport, loaded 4 people the dog the works with a stock 200 you out run and perform just about every boat in your class. Once you learn how to drive it, and it takes seat time to drive an Allison you'll be doing high speed turns with the same load. If you want performance get the Allison learn to drive it theres nothing like it for its stable ride at 80 Plus mph.
" it takes seat time to drive an Allison......"
I hear that statement a lot about Allisons. Are they really that harder to drive then other v-pad performance boats that you must balance. Why are they different from a Stream, Pulsare, etc?
Thx-

There is definitely a learning curve with the Allison's. Why they are harder to drive? Not sure if they're really harder to drive, it's just they run different than any other V-pad and once you learn how to drive them they really aren't "hard" to drive. They have a large pad, and a lot of natural lift with a long keel.
Allison's are like the hot blonde at the bar...just not everyone can walk up and get her to go home with you. :D

Point one....I'm biased.
Was considering both three Seasons ago when we decided to get "wet" again.
After riding in an XB21 at the bassmasters here several years ago, couldn't believe how well it performed over some very lumpy conditions.
I flashed back to the first Alli I ever saw at an Ohio race in 1979, impressed then, elated now.
and yes we run on some "big" water:eek:

If your boating is in very calm water..... Complete BS.
Setup correctly with a 300xs and the boat will run 96+ MPH. Even a bone stock 3.0 225 will run upper 70's. More of same..... Complete BS. If you think you or ANYONE (no offense to Randy) can make (either number) happen, you're out in space with little green men.

I gotta side with Jupiter on this one. There have been many Pulsare 21' with stock merc 300 power running over 90 mph in full weight "family" trim. One was even a bowrider. One of the guys with a stock Yamaha 250 was even running in the low 80's.

I don't think the design have changed much but some years required different transom bolts, there is a factory kit for the years that required it.

Cp, I don't know where you gather your information from (or what you are smoking) but my information comes from facts and my own experiences backed by GPS. My 1994 Pulsare 2100 with a stock Merc 3.0 Liter 225Xri, 13.5" of setback, hyd jackplate, Trophy Plus 26, full tank of gas, two adults and a cooler GPS'd 77MPH as sea level in 70 degree weather. Wildman's Pulsare 2100's running 16" of setback with a 300xs have GPS's 96 MPH. There have been many Pulsares on this site with 225's that ran into the mid 70's, and a few Puslare bowriders with 250XS's that ran into the 80's and a few Pulsare/300XS combos that have all run into the 90's!!!! I have run accross Lake Okeechobee in 2' windblown snot along side an Allison GS and walked away from him...not that I was faster, but the heavier boat handled the water much better on that particular day. So put away your crack pipe and come back to reality.

Jup I think what CP was trying to say is that the Allison will cruise at those speeds but the Checkmate will run those #s maxed out. I do know Randy has several videos on youtube that shows the Checkmates running those #s, they are fast and very nice!

i have driven both i drove a checkmate with a 225x with svs and 34cc heads got the boat to 90mph that was it maybe witha setup change a couple more mph but with my ally gs 100 allday good rough water boater plus it gets good mpg that checkmate ate 30 gallons in no time that day my gs only 15 if you can try and go for a ride in both and see what you like better

Cp blatantly stated that the Checkmate Pulsare will not run those speeds which is a false statement. We're not disputing that the Allison is faster and lighter. But when water gets BIG, a bigger/heavier boat will give you a better ride. Both the Allison and Pulsare will handle moderate water but from my experience the heavier Mate gave me a smoother ride without slowing down to a crawl.

Michael, I agree that the Checkmate will consume more fuel! (I've run out a few times) The 3.0 liter Mercs can suck some gas!! The dry weight of the Pulsare is 1375 lbs vs the Allison GS's dry weight of 940 lbs. That's 435 pound difference just in the hull weight. Both boats can gobble up 1-2' chop at speed...but change that to 2'-3' and beyond, I've felt more secure in the Mate than the Allison. Just my 2 cents worth!!
Sorry. Just seems a bit far-fetched to me. No intended offense. Would like a ride in one sometime.

We doo blow through there now and then, but if my wife can sit in a living room at 90, I may have to leave her here. Doncha know?

I have a really big problem with my Grandsport, when I am pulling it on the trailer for long distances [which I do often] I forget it is behind me and clip curbs with it. It is a breeze to pull, launch, retrieve and a blast to drive. I had mine built 14 years a go and it still has everyone asking if it is "new". My hull has over 2000 hours on it now.....BTW, did I mention I can put [2] 6-gallon portables inside beside the 30 gallon inboard tank to fuel my PWCs? I drop them in and close the hatch and forget they are there unless they are needed....

I know of a Blue and White GS with a stock 260 in St Cloud , Fl that will run 106+. You are right it is good in up to 2 foot waves only. The boat is a 95 and still looks like brand new. A definite keeper. Motor was built by "Allisoon Man"

Yes the 21 Checkmate runs over 96 with a 300XS. I have set up three of them this summer and they all did 96. Yes the Allison is faster if that's what you want. It also get 6 mpg at 4000 rpm, which is about 60 mph. Here's the video.
