Very close to pulling the trigger on upgrading the Sleekcraft from Bridgeport to 2011 Mercury either a 250XS or 300XS. My questions are as follows.

1. Considering the cost difference between the 250 and 300 why not go with the 300?
2. Which lower unit would be best sport master?
3. Which gear ratio for this application?
4. Would like to get the prop right from the start any suggestions?

Thanks for advise!

I have a pair of 300xs, offshore mids with 1.62 sportmasters and really like them. I would like a little better sound, they are quiet, but they have been great.
I purchased them in Sept of 2009 for $33,200. I didn't really consider the 250xs, in my opinion the 300xs is just a better value.
I am waiting the the DBR upgrades and will purchase the stage one kit to start with. The stock 300xs have pushed my 25 Motion 110 mph in fresh water, but the boat is very sensitive to small adjustments. I run 5" setbacks with the props turning in and prop centerlines 1 5/8" above (that is as high was I can go and still have water pressure) I turn 15" x 34" three blade cleavers turning 6050-6100 rpm.

I purchased by 300xs from Stevens Marine in Portland OR. I was happy, no sales tax and only a four hour drive from my place.

Hope this helps.

I love my 300xs... Also had a set of 250XS's that were also great. 250 xs will run on 87, 300xs needs 91 oct. From what I am told, a 250 xs makes about 270 @ the prop and a 300 makes about 305 @ a the prop. A 300 will hold its resale value much better than a 250xs. Probably a 3-5 mph difference between motas. I also think that the 250 is no longer a merc racing product which means you can get a 5 year warranty with it instead of a 2 year.

Thanks guys......I think the 300 with 1.63 sportmaster will be the way to go. Interesting JPF, I have Stevens Marine working on a quote now which makes a lot of sense given nearly 10% Cali tax and I am currently in Oregon working anyway. Did the $33,200 include rigging?
