Sup guys so I'm new to the world of performance boating. I have been boating for a few years now but have never owned a REAL performance boat. So I found a boat for sale on craigslist which the seller describes as an 87' challenger. I am aware that challengers were truely only build for 2 years before the molds were sold to superboat. The seller knew this as well and told me the original owner of challenger built the hull in 87 and met it with a superboat deck. Has anyone ever heard of the owner building additional hulls after 78' or is the hull a copy. If it is a copy should i be concerned. I looked over the boat and it all seemed solid and ready to go. So what do ya think.

Sounds like a story to sell a copy.

well i would say depends on how good it is and what shape it is in. There were a number of copys that were good boats, superboat, shadow, rallysport etc, but if someone just popped a hull who knows.

Helps what? I had a 21 Challenger for a number of years and now have a 21 Superboat. You have to be comfortable with a copy. If my Challenger was in the condition my Superboat is in I would rather have the Challenger even though it was 10 mph slower with the same power. :D

I was gonna wait til the spring to buy but saw the boat I'm currently looking at which is in the budget and doesn't seem like a bad deal.

Check it well. Climb inside it and look for dark spots in the gell, This is rot. Climb up in the bow and look up at the deck. They like to rot out around the stantions that hold the lifeline if not sealed right and of course the transom is a biggie. No challengers had a transom like that except the I/O were kinda like that. Shadows did but there is no notch in the pad. Dont know what that is. Serial #?

I dont have the serial number on me. I did check the year on it just to see if it was infact an 87 and it was. When i looked over the transom there were only minor gel coat cracks along it and in the splashwell. The transom is covered with a large aluminum plate that wraps over the transom lip into the splashwell. It looked very solid. I looked at the transom from the inside of the boat as well, there didnt seem to be any soft spots from poking around. Are there certain tell tale signs i should have my eye out for?
