Was thinking again and wondered why a rotary pump is used on the helm rather than a cylinder? In affect the cylinder would be the pump.

I don't think the torque would be all that great if fed through a gearing system for the helm. This would allow a centered wheel all the time.
Or would the prop torque feed right back through the whole system including something like a planetary gear set?

There is no valving in a cylinder to lock the fluid travel like the helm.You would be fighting the torque of the motor like you were steering from the tie bar more or less depending on the leverage.:cool:
