Just a quick question, in my fitting up the Johnson V8 outboard engine to my Nova, I have decided to go to hydraulic steering. While looking through information from my supplier I noted that I can go to hydraulic steering which can be power assisted. Since the V8 already has a pump etc for power steering should I use this to power assist my new steering or ditch it and just go to straight hydraulic steering?

Many thanks, SJ.

Ive heard that the power setup robs about 5-7 horses.
I use an hc5342 and cant see any reason to use both....
Just saw one on ebay for $125 and it didnt sell.... thought about snaggin' it but then I would have 3!

Thanks for the feedback Rockman. Can you tell me what helm pump you have married up to your hc5342. A new hydraulic steering system in NZ will cost me $2000 but it is a system that is rated for 350hp. I am keen to know what hydraulic steering systems others with V8s are running and are they rated for 300hp or more. I am thinking that I will look to have another V8 built with +350hp. ;)

Ill check, I believe its the pro 2.0 hh5770 1500psi.
1500 psi kevlar hoses into the hc5342 which is rated for twins upto 600hp total.... not sure how that comes into the equation (one cyl. for 2 motors?)
ANyway, Im sure we can get you into a hyd. system for less than 2K!
Did you try to contact the guy on ebay?

Good luck getting into streering for less than 2k. Try around $3500 for a latham set up.

Hey Rockman by the time I was able to log onto Ebay that auction had closed. I'll talk to you by PM. Thanks.

I looked at Latham steering but for a boat which will at best only go mid 60'smph I didn't think it warranted the expense and I don't believe I would see any improvement with side ram over standard front ram hydraulic steering. I guess no one with a V8 utilises the power steer with their hydraulic steering.
