what is the max rpm's stock mercury 2. 4 200 rods can turn without worrying about putting 1 through the block it has new vortex pistons and boysen reeds

6500 with oil injection. Some guys running them higher without it. Sneak up on it and check jetting/spark plugs.

I spin 'em 9k or so with better bolts and some prep work.

i keep hearing different answeres from different people the block has been opened up wit bigger ports new aftermarket reeds n pistons shaved heads should have around 150psi compression exaust tunner and new mercury racing exhaust plate and stock rods the guy helping me build the engine being its my first time building a motor this big said that i can turn it 9500 but i dont think it would hold up that well it also has bigger carbs and velocity stacks

Sounds like every mod was done for performance, but you don't mention anything being done for durability. (top pinning, rod bolts, etc.). I'd like to be there when you spin it to 9500 if you don't mind. :0

yes ive realized this after the powerhead was put together but this is my first real performance motor build ive messed around a lil with my 2.0 135 merc but nothing like this build it was mostly bolt on part except for the heads being shaved im still new @ this ive alwayz had a love for going fast especially on the water from when i was a kid i guess you learn from experiance but if it blows up then ill just build a new one lol what kind of speed should i get from it on my vector if it is set up right?

Prop it to turn 7500 for general use 8000 in bursts, you should be ok,and from what it sounds you'll have your hands full with the Vector for a while.Be sure someone with experience checks out the set-up,steering,controls,etc.Be sure to always wear a good life jacket and attach your quick-kill,and have a pickup boat on duty untill you have some seat time,Chris

i have seat time with my vector i had a 2. 5 150 with bigger carbs exhaust tunned lightweight alien covers and a nosecone with low water pick up on it and it ran 78mph very fun i ran it like that for a year now im upgrading the motor to sumthing with a lil more power

I feel better...but realize that a few miles per hour can make big changes, ask anyone who was comfortable at 80 and them blew out at 85...surprise,surprise.It sounds like you should be in the high 80's to low 90's once your set up well, have fun,be safe,Chris

That thing is gonna haul ass with that hopped up 200. I hope you have solid motor mounts because it will hit 90 like Chris said, and you don't want any slop or she'll be a handful and possibly hook on decel if your not careful.

The key on the high rpm is bursts to those numbers. You don't want to scream a mile or two across the lake at 9000. I'd keep that type of running in the low 7000 range with the right prop.

Chris, I had mine blow the prop out at 112. Know what you're talking about:)

thanks for all the advice and yes ig has solid mounts and hydrolic steering mo play in it @ all and a saftey killswitch

My Vector with a hot 2.4 200 ran 94.1 with a 28 pitch inline chopper.

Are we talking about being durable, practical, or both? If the motor were STOCK, it wouldn't be very practical to turn it over 6500, since the stock power curve tends to fall off above that range. Short drag runs with a smaller-pitched prop may still allow for RPM's of 7K or more.

If the port timing and compression have been changed as you indicated, this can change everything in terms of practicality. Raising port timing and cutting the exhaust chest can raise the powerband, but may hurt bottom-end power. If the motor has stock chrome bores and the porting has been ground upon, this may allow the chrome to peel and destroy the cylinder if the block hasn't been re-plated.

yes it still has the stock crome cylinders:-( but im just shooting for around 90mph for now until i get used ta it then i will upgrade the motor again i still have the 2. 5 that i mention earlier sitting in the shed waiting to b torn apart my final goal is to go over 100mph been my dream since i was 10years old lol but i dont think i have eneough seat time for that at the time so im just increasing my speed a lil @ a time until i get there

Just do what I finally did a few years ago. Ride in your friend's Allison with a 300 Drag at over 100. It is a lot cheaper LOL.

If your goal is 90. You really need little, if any mods. A healthy 2.4 will get you there with a good setup.

the block has been opened up wit bigger ports

yes it still has the stock crome cylinders

...then what has been "opened up"?

hydrostream300

intake and exhaust ports

I hope your chrome plating holds up at the edges of those opened-up ports. ;)

i have had good luck with the chrome bores. they are good blocks.
weak link can be "rods" depending on which ones you have, rod bolts, and bearings in spinning up a 2.4.
you have vertex pistons, so they are proven to be good for racing " short burst" !!!!!
i ran a 2.5 top bearing cap, so you can run a better top bearing too.
run the race bearings in cages for the rods.
it should run very well!! enjoy
