Hi. I've got what is supposed to an 89 115 x-flow. From what I can see, OMC didn't make a 115 in 89. This powerhead was bought off e-bay by the previous owner. The numbers on the casting plug are: 2BAXC011, with J0B862042 underneath. Can anyone tell me what year and horse this thing is? All I know is that it's black, has a flat exhaust cover, and a top mount regulator, not a lifting hook.

Thanks,
Bill

that model #(the first one) couldnt be right, serial #(second one) wont tell you any thing on a omc.
Check it again first letter will be either j or e for johnson or evinrude next will be the horsepower like 115 then E for electric start or whatever features it has, then L for long shaft finaly the MOST important the last 2 will match up with the word introduces and 1234567890 each letter matching up with a number of the year. example (E115ELCE)there might be another letter at the end like A dont worry about that, just the two that start with C or E meaning 89

Read the above post again. He is quoting the numbers on the block not on the clamp bracket. The numbers on the block mean nothing as far as I know.

58, if the engine has a bubble back it is a 140. If it doesn't it is either a 90 or a 115. To determine the difference between a 90 and A 115 you have to remove one of the transfer covers. The 90 has small round transfer ports and the 115 (and 140) has square transfer ports with a large corner radius.

Neither number is recognized in the Bombardier serial number database. It is possible that the number that starts with a J is a serial number. That letter B in the serial number is probably incorrect. Serial numbers should be all numbers-no alpha characters. Any chance you mis-read the number. The B could be an 8 or a 3.... Substituting both of them still does not provide a valid serial number.. If the engine has a top mount regulator, it could be an 1989 90 hp flatback block. The 88 blocks used the small rectifier only. The 90 blocks used the top mount regulator. The 88 blocks were the only ones with the top-mount lift bracket that year.

If its a flatback,115 its from 85 or older. That swelch plug is prob a reman's tag, look at the ser # job-862043. It prob is a 115 back then there were millions made.

Any way to judge year by the color?? When did OMC switch from white to black blocks? As far as I can tell, it hasn't been repainted, so that rules out being done at the time of a rebuild. And it is a flatback, so it's not a 140.

I typed in the second number wrong. It is J0862042. I hope this helps.

I suspect it is a propshaft 90.

OK, so that would make it the same as the original powerhead, an 82 flywheel 115. So the po didn't get ripped off too bad. Course he doesn't know the diff between flywheel and propshaft hp anyways.

Thanks guys.
