I have just taken apart two of these engines to build one good one (one had a blown cylinder, the other a top bearing issue). Now, the torsional damper on both are pretty rusted but still intact and I guess a round with a steel brush and some paint they will look good. However, how good will they work? The part number 394583 is no longer available and what I really want to know is how important this part is. I plan on sanding it, prime it, paint it, and mount it back on but wonder if some of you have any better ideas. The nut to mount is also an expired part, any ideas of another nut that will work?
Thanks,
Kim !

Ive rebuilt a few of these motors,I just cleaned the dampner up and re painted it, never had a problem with them. just make sure the rubber is tight and doesent spin

Thanks Elite. Just what I planned on doing. Weird that nobody else have an opinion about this or maybe we all use that old worn out damper and is afraid to say so.... Anyways, how about the nut to attach it, any ideas about what to use? The flywheel nut?

I did much the same with the damper in one that I built.... The rubber was ok, so I just wire brushed it, and painted it in a rust guard epoxy paint.... From pulling this engine down and putting it back together, I managed to lose my balancer nut, No flywheel nuts fit, I even thought the swivel tube nut may fit, but no joy.... I ended up buying a high tensile nut, cut it down to about 3/8" from memory, used a thing washer and loctite, then some more epoxy paint over the nut....

It is part of the rotating assembly. You can't omit it, unless you build a SS unit on a lathe. Or have a really sophisticated balancer.
