View Full Version : Tilt the rig without connecting the powertrim...

I have got a small issue during renovation of my 175 Johnson x-flow;
Together with a homemade lifting tool and my neighbours tractor, I managed
to get my engine into my warm garage and the waiting portable "transom".
After removing the intake mainfold, cleaning the carburetors and doing som
well needed overall cleaning, I want to clear the rust from the powertrim and get it
repainted, however, to be able to do that I need to tilt up the engine. Can that
be done without connecting the engine to the boat again ? If possible I want to do
this manually (bad english?) in order to avoid dragging the engine outside again.
Locate the trim wires and energize them with a battery or some other power source. If it was a Merc I could tell you which wires to use but being it is an OMC I have no idea. The Merc would be blue up and green down on a three wire and a two wire would be green positive blue negative down and blue positive green negative up. Maybe they are the similar.

If you can't connect it to a batt, there should be a matual release screw on the unit some where, on my 200 looper it's on the left side, loosen it up and you should be able to lift it up by hand.

Locate main wires to trim motor, with battery jump wires,+and - hooked up to wires one way up,reverse wires down. Its that simple. Jump wires need to be # 14 or bigger. Big draw.

I think you can just crank it up with a jack and swing the lock in place. There should be a bypass in the hydraulic circuit to allow the engine to tilt up as if you hit something while underway.
My Yamaha tilted right the hell up when I ran it aground once. Lucky that I had let off the throttle. I had to hold the trim button for the system to catch back up and push the trim rams out after we got turned around.

orignal trim motors had 3 wires, black is ground.-blue is up -green is down. Newer style or "replaced" trim motors have 2 wires, to go up- ground the green wire -positive to blue , to go down- ground the blue wire-posiitive to green wire. ITS EASY TO REMEMBER ---"BLUE SKY-GREEN WATER". Most OMC engines have manual tilt realease valve on lower starboard transmon bracket-large screwdriver-2/3 counterclockwise turns and motor can be raised/lowered( not easy) BE CAREFULL MOTOR ON STAND WILL FALL OVER..th

Ok Greg!
Excuse my english, but "jump-wires" is that the kind of wires you use when you help
someone to start his car??
If I´ve understood everything right, I only need to connect the cables to a ordinary 12v start battery in order to get the
hydraulic engine to work!?
