I need some input from you old inline guys. I finally put a jack plate on the Contender and now that I have the ability to get the prop up out of the water, what prop would you suggest? The boat is a Carlson Contender, 14 ft. semi-tunnel, flat bottom. The motor is a 1968 100 hp 89 cu.in. powerhead (yeah I know, a 99 cu. in. would be better) no power trim. I have looked at Conrads prop and he is running a cleaver but with a lot bigger motor and with power trim. Hoping some of you old inline racers might remember what was being run on flattys with the old 100 motor back in the day. Bronze 2 blade? What pitch?

BTW-it has a stock LU on it.

Thanks, Bernie

I dunno if I want em or not...hoping some old guy who messed with these old motors and boats can tell me. I'm old but I'm living my 2nd childhood and never got to play with this stuff before.

What pitch are the ones you guys have? I was running a 21" 3 blade submerged and it tachs about right (54-5500 rpm) but I imagine with the prop above water I'll need a longer pitch?

The the 89 cube motor you should do well with a 21 pitch two blade bronze like your doing submerged.

If you start surfacing it you will want to go up to the 23 pitch two blade bronze, but make sure it has some cup to it. Michigan and Mercury made some pretty good 2 blade cupped props. At the speeds you will be seeing I think a chopper may work well too.

I run a chopper on my Contender when I keep it under 65 mph. It lifts the boat up at slower speeds. Over 65 mph i put a cleaver on. Just depends what IM doing that day.

When I ran my 1965 900 on my Contender (89 block same as yours roughly) I ran a 21 mercury cupped prop with the cav plate 1-2 inches above the water line. I did not have a jack plate then and that was as high as I could go.

I got 52ish mph out of that set up. If I had a good 23 at the time it would have gone a bit faster I think.

I would think with your 1000 a 23 cupped prop and elevating the motor 3+ inches off the transom you could see high 50's out of your set up. I think once I switched to a 1100 and a 23 prop I hit 56-58 mph. But I still did not have it high enough then.

So in summary. I think a 23 bronze cupped would be nice. Or an inline small ear chopper. I used a 24 chopper this year to drag race the 1/4 mile. It ran 67.5 mph @ 6900RPM with the 1500. Your 1000 should spin close to 6k with out much issue for short runs.

Wish you lived closer Id set you up with my bronze and chopper props :)

Bernie, I believe the one in route is a 23, I knew I was forgetting to look at something before shipping....sorry bout that.
If memory serves me right, I want to say we use to turn that bugger at 5600-5700 on that Invader. 5500 all day long !
Even ran it on a 198? 115 inline 20" motor and it ran pretty damn good.

Conrad, as you can see, Chris has hooked me up with a 2 blade bronze. He was running it on a 15 ft. GW invader with a 1100 so it should be real close to right.

Now I gotta get an accurate tach. I thought it was good but when I put the 17p off my Powercat on it I could hear the motor rev to the moon but the tach stopped at around 5500.....sure was fun with the BP mid howling!

Chris, the description of the rig you had it on was good enough for me, should be right in the ball park.

Thanks, Bernie
