View Full Version : Steering question
I have a stoker, on the front of the motor (steering) there is a braided metal line that comes in from both sides, there is a plastic coating over this that is cracking. What is this part called and can I swap it out myself. Is it in need of replacement when the covering comes off? If this is a stupid question take it easy on me. I am not an outboard guy but will slowly become one. Thanks

Is it braided like a aero quip hose or is it a braided cover over a cable. What helm is in it? Can you post a pic. Congrats on your new ride.
Just sent you a Pm, the Stoker is just to cool. I will get some pics in the morning. It is braided metal with a plastic coating over it.. sorry for being dumb but my other speed boats were all IO's.

Sounds like a teleflex cable steering with a rotery helm, maybe:D
Got it, going to make an appt. with Fuller marine, The cable looks like crap in the picture but the boat is mint condition, the front of the motor and splash well were not covered so they weathered, the rest of the boat was tucked away.

Good looking boat. Just like Scotts but he doesnt have the windshield or ski pole:D
Thanks, if I can dial it in like scotts I would be very happy. Going to fun in the Bay, kidding . I think Scott has a 20 sst, this is a 204SST, I think his is lighter and faster if I am not mistaken.

Scott brings both his boys 9 and 13. When the water gets rough they wind up in my boat.
fast fun 2

The photo is blurry but it looks like/probably is Morse dual opposed rack/cable steering, can't buy it anymore. The plastic cable jacket has cracked and exposed the cable core. It's no good anymore, best to simply replace with a high-performance hydraulic system. The Latham, Marine Machine etc. systems are best but expensive relative to the value of the rig. Best value for the buck is still Teleflex's SeaStar Pro system, about $1000 not including installation.

Yes it is morse had a chance to go over it today and it is dual it comes in from both sides. What are the odds of picking up some cables on the boards? part numbers say 300620 for one and 300320 for the other.

I'm pretty sure that the Teleflext replacement cables will work. You can call Teleflex to be sure, but I think they will--NOT the "NFB" (no feedback) cables, but rather the "Big T" cables.
John
Teleflex says nothing will work. I will have to look used or swap out the steering, works well just that plastic coating is peeling off.

I hate to encourage you putting off a steering repair but if you must then why not get some large heat shrink tubing, disconnect the cables, slip the heat shrink on, and use that to seal the cables for now?
