View Full Version : Stator trouble on 2.4?

Well, I discovered some of my wiring melting at the blocks coming from the trigger and stator. According to the book, I am with tolerance on ohms for the trigger but when it comes to the stator I am much higher than the specs allow. I did replace the melted sections of wire but anyone know why they could be getting so hot that the insulation is melting? It is the original harness as far as I can tell. The FSM is great but it doesn't explain system and component operation in terms of what makes the parts work together. Does the stator's wiring resistance play a significnt role? I wish I knew more about these systems but I guess I'll know shortly! :) Thanks

The wiring is likely getting up in years. I've seen the insulation just deteriorate til it appeared to be burned but was actually just falling apart. Most of the time melted wiring is a result of heat penetrating through the block to where the wires are secured. If not you'll see e-poxy(plastic covering) dripping from where it melted. This shows there is a problem to deal with. Not sure about the Ohms impedence but if the engines firing and your charging system is working I'd think the stator was good as all it does is produce electricity for charging and firing. If it's doing that it's likely good.

Eagle....you could be right there. All the years of heat, exposure to fuels, water and just wear probably will be the answer. Now the engine does fire up just fine but I don't know if the charging system is working. I do have to recharge my battery every couple of months and I do not disconnect the battery leads between uses.

I charge mine every trip out on my 2.4.....(but I do have about 1400 watts of stereo).....
