I want to buy a DDT and I see there are a few different "brands" out there at different price points. Can someone with experience with these different branded DDTs chime in with what the differences might be? Or more importantly any that are identical in quality and function to the Quicksilver one, and ones to stay away from? I know I might have to get different plugs/harnesses, but this would be for use on motors such as Merc 280 ROS, Merc 225 PM, Merc 300x, and possibly others.

They all are identical to the quicksilver one except for maybe a different face plate. All the functions are the same. I have a OTC manufactured one with a red case and faceplate with plugs/harnesses for the 225pm,260,drag,and 280 with the corresponding software cartridge I would sell for $500 plus shipping.

Thanks for the info. Are the plugs different for say a 1998 225 Promax vs a 2005 280? And is there any difference in software and/or modules I need to be aware of for these engines?

OTC made all of them including the ones for Mercury. Here is a link to a pretty good list of carts and cables.

The plugs/software cartridges are the same for the 225pm and 280.....the 260/drag uses a different plug but the same software. As for the 300x, im not familiar with that engine but i'm pretty sure it uses a different plug and software cartidge because its a 3.0 liter....The DDT itself can be used on any EFI outboard as long as you have the corresponding plug/cartridge, which can be had on ebay pretty reasonably.
