I just picked up a flats boat and noticed that there is water/smoke dumping out of the front of the motor (it appears to be below the cowling inside the skirt). When i take the cowl off i do not see any of the smoke or water in there. the motor is a 97 yamaha 90. Any ideas?

there is some rubber exhaust gaskets, on the back, and on the lower unit, keeps exhaust from gettin inside the hood, cuzz your seein water too, thinkin it's the one in the back. have a look at the exhaust port on the back of the mid.

the gasket in the back would cause water in the front?? When you say to look around the exhaust port, I assume you are referring to the relief in the mid? What am I looking for? Lack of exhaust and water??

well i pulled off the skirt for further investigation. it does not do it when hooked up on the hose, only when in the water. the smoke and water appear to be coming from where the steering/tiller arm is...

Exhaust leak in the mid section start at the lower unit and work your way up to the upper mounts probably the exhaust plate gasket between the midsection and powerhead.

update: pulled the powerhead yesterday to check things out. gasket was too corroded/torn apart from pulling the powerhead to make any sense of it. removed all traces of old gasket and put it back together and it still leaks just as bad... there were no corrosion holes in the base of the powerhead or the exhaust plate but i did neglect to verify the surfaces to be flat and true. has anyone ever used sealant on a powerhead gasket before? I am thinking when I take it apart again I will go back with a thin coat of RTV...
