I have a Merc 2.4 with a stock lower unit that has been modified with a bobs nose cone and low water pick up....my question is after i run the boat i have a small amount of gearcase oil that runs out of two small holes near the top of the case (vent holes?)one on either side.I've changed the oil and there is no water gettin into the case...I understand that the gearcase builds pressure but this can't be normal.Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)

Sounds like the shift shaft seal, what color is the oil?

It's the mercury performance gearcase oil...a dark blue.

Drop the case replace the shift shaft/presure check, refill with oil

I ran it yesterday on the hose for about five min. It never came out while it was running....but after about fifteen min. or so it started seeping out of those holes and running down the side of the case.

matt, if the lower is still weeping from the vent holes after the oil level has been lowered approx. an ounce, then it's time for a shiftshaft seal replacement.

Hey Gary,I did take a little over an ounce out but still leaking out of the vent holes....are those vent holes factory or is that a mod that is done to relieve pressure? Does the case have some sort of check valve to keep water out?

factory holes. internal pressure probably keeping water from entering at the shift shaft , which is a good thing. merc hi performance lower lube can mix with water to some degree & still lubricate .i'll be home sunday & will call you monday or ride by your shop .been on a well needed VACATION since last weekend.
