Prolly a top 10 stupid question, but with the boat on the trailer, how can you determine whether you have a RH or LH rotating engine?

Right hand engines turn clockwise. left hand engines turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE.

You mean from above,if your talking engine. If your talking prop, from behind. Most all engines turn clockwise,it's the gearcase that changes it to counter rotation. There were some engines that spun backwards but not many. OMC V-6-8 not positive about mercs.

The prop is off right now - in neutral, the prop shaft spins both ways (obviously) and when i engage in forward I can't turn the prop shaft either way. So how can I figure this out? Tx.

Shift into fwd, jump selonoid with screwdriver, watch your legs,if it spins clockwise RH, counter clockwise LH
How about a model or ser # and make.

if it's a situation where the motor can't be cranked, you could drop the lower and check the set in the impeller to determine rotation!
