With all the moisture lately I developed a miss taking off and some cylinders cutting in and out while cruising along. I also noticed that the tach will start reading about 1000 rpms higher when this happens at times. I know these electronics are getting harder to get and I don't want to just start swapping parts without trying to narrow it down. A reputable person on here is already pointing me toward the stator and gave me a few things to check but any other advice is appreciated before I put it away for the winter. I initially thought powerpack but the tach acting up is making me think it could be stator or rectifier.

Did you check and see if the cowl sucked in some wool from the back seat?

Ralph, thought of something else, have you checked the magnets on the flywheel. If they are loose and moving will cause it to work then not work, tach and ignition. Spacing should be equal between each magnet. I am sure you know that but thought I would bring it up anyways.

Greg I have never had the flywheel off the motor. It has been pretty good motor so far. It started this a few weeks ago so I swapped out the NGK's with new Champions and the motor seamed better but I noticed more rpms on the tach. The next week it rained and the motor started cutting in and out. I pulled the cowling and you could see water was spraying around inside there. The front half had oily residue on it so I figured water was getting into the carbs. I found the water suction check valve was blocked and the water was not getting sucked out of the pan. This weekend was the first I tried it since I cleaned the check valve. I did not get as much water in the cowling but the problem was still there. The cowling is the factory limited edition with the vents on top and on the sides but they are just as they left the factory with the diverters. Most of my experience was with the XP2.6 crossflows. I have not messed around with the loopers too much.

OMG,Ithink all those flywheels throw magnets, heck they are only glued on. I have glued many back together. You should be able to look at the spacing between each magnet, they should all be equal. If you can pull the flywheel and check them, see if any are loose.

If I get a chance I want to index the flywheel and see if I am double firing on any cylinders or not firing at all. I don't usually run it hard so I may not even notice on a V8 if I am down on a cylinder unless it is a top end run. I know on the crossflow you loose about 1000 rpms if you are down a cylinder but not sure about the V8.

That there is some funny sh!t!!!
Also, I thought the magnets that come loose are for the charging system only...
The timing is in the hub of the wheel...no?

Timing in hub yes, outer ones are charging both battery and operate the charge coils (ign) on the stator.

hey river rat running the same boat and motor as you about 4 weeks ago my tac started actin up jumping around like you were talking about sometimes it acted like it was running out of gas or on 4 cyl. last week at brookeville one of my coil packs did go all the way out your motor sounds like its doing the smae thing changed it out with two new cdi coil packs with no rev limiters fixed the problem by the way i would like to takl to you about the setup on yours to see what you're running

i have a similar issue took the fly wheel off magnets loose everywhere.

I beleive you have the 3.6 with 2 power packs. Mine is the 4.0 with the single power pack.

Thanks. I will look closely at the magnets. First thing I will do is check the timing on all clyinder just to make sure it is firing when it is supposed to then I will pull the flywheel. Since the tach is reading higher when it acts up i wouldn't think it would be the powerpack. I would think if it was the powerpack I would be down on cylinders which in theory should be down in rpms, not higher in rpms.

you are right i have the 3.6 with 2 coil packs my tack was going crazy up and down the coils fixed mine i would like to know the set up you are running looks the same as mine i have 6 inch set back with power jack plate has a wedge jack plate to motor takes away trim acts like it needs more bow lift i was thinking of putting 8 more inches of set back on it without the wedge i can hit low 80 s now what about you????

Check the big orange plug, mine had carbon burned across and was causing me all sorts of problems.
