I want to lift my Johnson 175 of the transom and bring it in to my garage during
the winter. Where do I lift it ? Is there anything else besides a correct lifting point
that is really important during this operation ?
Best regards !!

Center of flywheel. There will be a large threaded hole at the top of the fly wheel. Get a big threaded bolt and a ring welded on. Thats what I did. You can just use the head of the bolt but thats risky. Just bring to work or have someone who works were they may weld tac it on there for ya. Only takes a second. Then you have a lifting ring. You can also buy them. Hears a pick of mine I made when i was lifting my motor. This one I accually used a flywheel puller and threaded a chunck of rebarb that I welded a big nut to. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h151/whipperr/DSCF5872.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h151/whipperr/DSCF5871.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h151/whipperr/pics170-2.jpg http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h151/whipperr/pics180-2.jpg

Im pretty sure there all the same Merc,OMC etc.. Just make sure you screw it in a good amount of threads and its a good idea to have the gear case blocked or something as a bit of a saftey just incase so your lower doesnt hit the ground ever. You can see in the one when I lifted it with the forklift how I braced the bottom. When you undo the bolts youll be playing with the lift for tension to get the bolts out is why.

Omc flywheels do not have threads like that. You do still pick it up from the flywheel but its from the 3 tapped places in the flywheel in a triangle pattern.

Thanks for that I wasnt sure ooops.:D Its a big flat washer right that threads in three spots like this? http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/showthread.php?53580-Lifting-a-175-HP-Johnson-out-of-a-boat It looks like you could still make somthing like this. Youll need a strong flat pice of steel drill three holes for the taped spots then one more larger hole dead center. The dead center hole youll have to make a ringed eye like mine and put a low profile bolt on the other side. Screw in the three bolts and lift. Youll just have to be sure that the larger bolt in the middle clears the flywheel bolt is all. If you used slightly longer bolts for the three around the flywheel {evenly tightened the same hight} that should work also.
Thanks for correcting me outboards4life!!

no problem. easiest way to do it is a flat piece of steel with the 3 holes drilled in it and weld a D ring to it. Unless you have the puller in which case just use that and put a eye bolt in the center and lift from there. The motor that is pictured on the other website is a crossflow which has a completely different style flywheel than most(not all) loopers. The only OMC flywheels I have seen that have the merc style internal threads are the gold flywheels.

I made my own for my 1986 Evinrude 140hp V 4, make sure to run a tap in the 3 holes to clean them and make sure someone did not try the wrong bolts, mine were US threads. I used a Snap On balancer puller 3 hardened bolts with 2 washers each and a eye bolt nut and washer from a hardware store. Worked fine on 2 engines so far.

^^^^^This is the proper way to lift a OMC engine. If memory serves me right the bolts are 5/16 by 24 (fine pitch) and will need to be approx 3.5 to 4 inches long. I built mine out of a scrap 1/4 flat steel and bought a closed eyelet at Lowes. Make sure you get the forged closed eyelet as the non closed are only rated for 400 lbs.
