View Full Version : Bow Hunter Question
I haven't shot a compound in about 25 yrs and I saw a bow being traded on the Hardcore Pawn show, it got me thinking! Question, how do the new bows differ? I've was damn good with the older bows which shot at about 220 fps. I hear the new bows have more drop-off and are faster? With a 180 (?) grain Thumder head I had straigh flight to about 15 yrds, about 3-4" drop at 20-22 yrds. I would think the heads are now lighter and the speed is faster?

Pretty much all the top bows are over 300 ft now. Allows you to shoot one pin out to around 25 yds, give or take. I need to upgrade but they are all so expensive. Mine is probably 8 yrs old and shoots around 240-245 at 62 lbs.
Yea on that Pawn show the worker gave the guy something like $600 for the bow! BTW, what's the cost for a arrow and a head run now, and are they lighter???

a bit on the beginner side, but I bought my first one the other day at basspro. Got a recurve with a 30lb draw. Shot it inside their gallery and liked it. For plinking purposes, its fun. Can put all ten arrows in a 2x2 box end at 20 paces. Problem I ran into was finding arrows. The ones at BP were like 6 for $60.. ? wth? Went to the local walmart and they had carbon with smaller flights for $4 a peice and 100 gram tips for about 3 bucks more + string wax. They work fine but I'm sure it could be better. For the recurve, I'm having to get educated as they need larger flights for stability. Anything over 25 yards takes some Kentucky windage to hit the 2x2.
Besides the large bruises on my arm, its a ton of fun. Generally shoot with a jacket on just in case. Now to get the dog to sit still long enough with that apple on his head:D
Anyone know where I can get some longbow arrows at a cheap price? Off topic but thanks for letting me share.

The new bows rock. They are small, and good ones shoot over 300 FPS. Get a rage or bloodrunner broadhead, and they cut a huge hole in whatever you shoot at. Let off is like 85% or more, plus, arrows are carbon now too.
I have an older PSE that maxes out at 285 and its pretty cool. I have pins out to 45 yards. I love to shoot it, but think it needs to see a pro, to be paper tuned. I put new stings and cables on it last year.
