So,I got a 86 johnny v8 with a 25 inch mid. I have a few ideas, but would like some direction on mids, lowers and set back. I already know that Monty is the man to see on hp! So, I thought I d fire a few questions at everyone!

1. is the mad efi adapter plate and sportmaster/cle a good idea or will a omc v6 mid work?

2. if not, where or who can cut down my mid or wheres the best place to find one besides ebay?

3. whats a good prop to run?

4. with no vro to deal with whats a good fuel pump to use with a mid boat mounted fuel tank?

5. whats a good manual jackplate for these big guys?

6. I have a hydronautics hydraulic steering system i want to use that was for a merc, is there a conversion kit or sea star parts to swap out?

My boat has a 31 inch centerline at drain plug transom height with a 4 1/2 pad with 81 inches wide at rear of transom deck width. overall length is 21 ft. I m giving you guys these measurements to help with anything I might not have thought of. I have mounted the motor just to move the boat in my garage and the homemade jack plate is not high enough( bolt holes in plate) and only has 6 1/2 inches set back and there is no clearance at transom for steering and full tilt. I think thats it for now!:nonod: here are some pics and thanks guys for all the info. oh, I would have posted this in tech, however, I wanted to start here then head over there!!

I suspect that you can buy the 20" mid cheaper than you can have your 25 cut down. Look through old motor and also old parts posts here--several guys with big lots of V8 parts as they moved out of them, may still have a lot. Also call Jenksam--I know he has a lot of OMC parts.

I am no prop expert, but the guys who are will need to know a lot more about your boat to help.

You can run a Holly red so long as you adjust the floats mildly. I have gone through about 4 of them, though, with the pumps freezing up so I am trying a Carter next. But most people on here do fine with the red.

If you run the OMC lower unit, pin it. Drill 4 1/4" holes around the bullet and into the bearing carrier, use flat head ss machine srews and nylock nuts. The carier fit is not real tight, and with a surfacing motor the vibration will egg-shape the can real quick.

Couple things, since this is your first V-8 some stuff you may not know. Transom bolts are special to V-8 and stamped v8 on the head of bolt, and make sure you use the support pad on the outside of clamp bracket. V-6 mid and clamp bracket is out of the question. Go with a hudrolic jack plate, most mfg's make them for v-8's. Plus every different prop works best at a different height, you will drive your self crazy trying different props and different heights with a manual jack plate. If your transom is 31" then a 25" will work fine,or did I read that wrong.

Carter is the way to go. More flow, lower pressure, less noise, less trouble.

I am in a similar position to you though the V8 I purchased is the 4.0litre 1990 model. Luckily I managed to find a good example with the 20in offshore mid. I purchase a Bob's Machine Shop Extreme hydraulic jack plate with guage. Be careful cause some jack plates specifiy max HP of 300 but not if it is a V8. Also if you hot the V8 up then you can also find the plate is not up to the job.

I also purchased two Merc Rev 4's props in 23 and 25 pitch.

The V8 is destined to be bracketed on the back of a Wellcraft Nova 230 XT which is due to arrive in New Zealand via container at the end of this coming week.

We should compare notes on a regular basis. ;)

Good luck,

Nev.

I just recently installed a Carter pump, and I am very pleased. Another advantage to the Carter is that it will pull fuel from the tank, as opposed to the Holley, which is a siphon feed, and should be mounted below the tank.

Thanks guys! Yeah Perfmarine, the 25 inch does line up with the pad however, I want to lower the high center of gravity of the motor. Lil toy, I dont have a clue to to what you re saying about the carrier! lol! But I believe it! I ve measured and need an 8 in setback plate, I m gonna stick the manual simply because I refuse to pay $800 bucks from Bob s! Now, on the fuel pump, does one run the fuel pump continuously or just to get prime and if in continuously, does it flood if motor stalls? i m used to primer bulbs!! Keep the info comin guys!!!

Wire the pump to your ignition switch so it turns on when you turn the key to the on position. I made the connection from the positive terminal on the tachometer. The pump runs continuously. You may pump initial pressure up with the primer bulb. I removed the VRO entirely so there was no chance of air leaks. Regulate the fuel pressure a little below 7 p.s.i. and the floats in the carb will not allow it to flood. I recommend a fuel pressure gauge coming from the fuel pressure regulator so you can tell what's going on. It sounds complicated, but it is really very simple. Make sure the water separator filter is before the pump, and the regulator is after.
