Does anyone know where I can find any info on cutting down a long trim ram to the short drag style I see alot of post on here about doing it but nothing telling anything about it ??? i made one and turned into a huge project because of incompetent persons doing there part. cutting the barrel is not difficult i was talked into cutting piston rod under cross pin tube removing section re-welding instead of going from bottom up piston assembly un screws then cut rod section and re-thread o ring doesnt passover barrell cut if u measure correctly. do not cut rod at pivit end yoke must be exactly square and centered or side ss pins will not go in. after all effort an$$$$ still need wedges to get neg motor tilt. the merc race ram is best buy if you have money to burn. i learned my lesson......

Mag ,
Honestly man , I'm not sure which is worse ;

#1 You responding to a six year old post .

#2 Giving false advise off of a bad experience .

A properly cut cylinder will tuck under the front of the cavitation plate , going full negative trim .
Where they are limited is in extension . They will still go out at a 45* degree angle , which is more than enough to get the prop and skeg out of the water .

I have no less than a dozen cylinders in the shop right now , and not one of them has a good top loop . This one was reusable . I cut the bottom of the block (loop) square and cut the shaft square on a lathe . One would have to have a pretty bad day to glue it on crooked ..

Not all , but many look like this .

Before you say they should be cut at the bottom and rethreaded , you really should cut both ends off of the shaft and see that it's actually a solid steel bar inside of a stainless tube , and what it would take to machine it .
I didn't understand what you meant about the O-ring catching . I install a new set of rings , seals and wiper on each cyl , so far , no issues .
I have put a lot of time and effort in making 316L top loops , Delran bushings and my own 316L top pins .
You can see at the bottom right that the shafts are also cut in a mill to fit the round loops. And I have a fixture to hold them in place when I weld them together .
If you ever get to the point where you want to fix yours , I have plenty of parts and I'll even take your cartridge in on trade ... even if I throw it in the dumpster ;)

Chaz,
my top loop is rusted out on my 2008 300 xs. Do you rebuild the ram if I sent you my entire cylinder trim ? New ones are pricey!
thanks

What is the cost to shorten a stock 2.5 ram ? I'm putting together a Powell cut mid and figured it would be more desirable. Do you know the weight difference between the cut and factory short ram ? Thanks Mike

Nice work ! Question , the original upper ram pin has a hole for a pin in order for the senders to operate. I have seen several pins snap there as I'm sure you've seen . I want to retain the senders however without a hole thru pin which weakens it . Was thinking of machining a flat spot and using a set screw . Thoughts?

My ram upper is mint , can and will your pin simply replace my stock flawed pin with the hole in center ?

Most pins I see are far from "mint" ( btw isn't that a coin collector term meaning uncirculated ? ) Anyway , if your's is in "good" ;) condition , I think I would just tig weld the pin hole shut on both sides with 309 and mill a small flat on one side .
If you just have to have a 316L solid pin ... I will be happy to build you one ..
